Japan: more sales data for Week 3 2018, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, December, more (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create (Week 3)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 3, 2018. It reveals that total Software sales topped 455 000 units, which is 94.52% of Week 3 sales. Unsurprisingly, sales are once again down in this post-New Year week, despite the new releases.

That being said, those did have an impact on sales of new releases: they amount to 130.54% of Week 2 sales. It turns out it’s previously-released titles that are bringing Software sales down: they amount to 83.84% of Week 2 sales.

Hardware sales topped 113 000 units, which is 110.35% of Week 2 sales. This week, the increase in home console sales compensated for the drop in handheld sales. With 43 000 units sold, the Nintendo Switch has now passed the 3.5 million units milestone.

As for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, it’s off to a solid start with 67 000 units sold, and with a healthy sell-through ratio: 78.26%. Up until now, Rabbids haven’t really been all that popular in Japan (understatement), which is why pre-orders for the game were initially rather sluggish. However, they increased noticeably during the launch week, to over 30 000 units.

Nintendo began advertising the game at TV from the end of last year, and this had a noticeable impact, attracting a family audience.

Dengeki (Week 3)

Dengeki report significantly better sales for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle at launch than Media Create, with about 83 000 units. They point out that while it’s not much compared to other Mario games on Nintendo Switch, the sell-through ratio is pretty high (about 85%), and so they expect growth in the future.

This week, Splatoon 2 sold about 30 000 units, which brings the total since launch to over 2 million units: it’s the very first multi-million seller on Nintendo Switch! Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 28 000 units (over 1 313 000 units since launch, reaching 1.3 million units in 9 months), and Super Mario Odyssey has reached 1.5 million units since launch (in only 3 months!) thanks to the 20 000 units sold during this Week 3.

As for Hardware, sales grew by 3% this week, to 114 000 units.

December 2017 – Digital sales estimates (Famitsu)

This week, the latest issue of Famitsu shares the latest digital sales estimates, for December. Unsurprisingly, sales are pretty low for games on Nintendo platforms, with less than 5% of total sales during that month coming from the Nintendo eShop, for pretty much all games. There’s just one exception: Xenoblade Chronicles 2, which isn’t too surprising as it targets an older audience than the other games (which are all family-focused).
