Japan: more sales data for Week 29, 2017, Splatoon 2, H1 2017 (Media Create, Dengeki, Famitsu)

Week 29 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 29, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 987 000 units, which is 251.55% of Week 28 sales. As you can imagine, this massive increase is due to Spatoon 2, which sold over 600 000 units, making it the best-selling game on the console.

Nintendo shipped many more Nintendo Switch units to retailers for Splatoon 2, which is why the console ended up selling almost 100 000 units. This actually makes it the second best week for the Nintendo Switch, following that pretty important one in March (you know… launch week!). Total Hardware sales topped 169 000 units (128.18% of Week 28): a significant boost caused by the very console you just read about!

Back to Splatoon 2: Media Create reports that it sold over 648 000 units during the first three days, and that Nintendo shipped about 1 million units to retailers for launch week (which explains why almost no stores reported any shortages). Of course, you can bet that retailers will have no trouble selling all the remaining units, and at full price to boot… before ordering a lot more (some of them most likely already have).

Splatoon 2 sold over 4 times what the original did during its launch week (with one extra day!): 648 000 units vs 145 000 units. And if not for Nintendo Switch shortages, it would most likely have sold 5 if not 6 times what the original did at launch.

Splatoon 2 is already the best-selling game on Nintendo Switch (as mentioned above). Naturally, it’s also the best debut for the platform: it sold more than two times what Mario Kart 8 Deluxe did at launch (about 285 000 units).

The attach rate is also quite impressive, with 54.14% for Splatoon 2, and 36.64% for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (granted, there was a Nintendo Switch bundle for the former). Media Create points out that demand still outweights offer by a wide margin, Hardware-wise, and so they expect Spaltoon 2 to keep selling pretty stadily as more Nintendo Switch units are shipped to retailers.

Week 29, 2017 (Dengeki)

Dengeki report that Splatoon 2 sold about 646 000 units at launch, with a pretty good sell-through ratio: 65%. Just like Media Create, they point out that it’s already the best-selling game on Nintendo Switch (beating Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and its 639 000 units sold), and that it sold better than Splatoon did at launch, back in 2015 (about 152 000 units).

Next, we have Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy at #2 with 72 000 units: that’s quite worse than Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, which sold 128 000 units on launch week (over 283 000 units LTD). However, the sell-through ratio is pretty good: about 75%, meaning that retailers will not have to slash the price to get rid of remaining units… in fact, they’re going to have to order some more!

And as mentioned on Wednesday, the fact that this game was also released on smart devices is partly to blame for the “low” sales, especially since early data shows that it’s been faring fairly well (topping the download charts for several days).

Finally, the latest entry in the Sumikko Gurashi series sold about 19 000 units at launch.

This week, total Hardware sales topped 164 000 units: an increase of 42%, quite obviously due to the release of Splatoon 2 and the big shipments that came with it. Thanks to those shipments, Nintendo Switch sales increased by 152.2%! Nintendo’s console also secured 57.1% of total Hardware sales, and 69.4% of total Software sales, dominating both markets!

Splatoon 2 seems to have attracted a lot of new users to the Nintendo Switch, but even those who already owned it were looking forward to it. After all, the attach rate is 53.6%, which means that more than half of all current Nintendo Switch owners (including those who only bought the console at launch) already own Splatoon 2!

It now remains to be seen how that attach rate will increase in the upcoming weeks, with the Summer holidays and all. It’s most likely not going to drop any time soon, and not in a significant manner (not until another major system-seller is released… Super Mario Odyssey, perhaps?). It will also need much bigger Nintendo Switch shipments for it to drop.

The next big releases for the Japanese market is Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, releasing on both Nitnendo 3DS and PlayStation 4 on July 29th (already available on digital storefronts as of writing).

Half 1 2017 (Famitsu – December 26th to June 25th)

In its latest issue, Famitsu provides us with the Top 100 Software for the first half of 2017. The Top 10 is anything but surprising for those of you who regularly read the weekly sales reports from Media Create / Famitsu, but it’s still nice to see there’s already some Nintendo Switch games in there (especially with Hardware shortages).

Unfortunatly, only one game managed to sell over 1 million units (Monster Hunter XX, to the surprise of no one!), and the others are far behind it. With the exception of the Nintendo Switch titles, all the games on Nintendo platforms in the Top 10 are ever-green titles, released last year. The first non-2016 game in the Top 10 is Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, at #12!

By the way, the Nintendo 3DS is not the platform with the most games in the Top 100, though it came second and not very far from the PlayStation 4 at #1. The Nintendo Switch already has 10 titles, while the Wii U managed to keep 5 of them. And yes, there IS a Wii game in the Top 100: check out the game ranked #69!

June 2017 – Digital estimates (Famitsu – May 29th to June 25th)

In its latest issue, Famitsu provides us with their latest digital estimates data, this time covering June. ARMS had a decent debut with 20 941 estimated sales, which is a surprisingly good result given the retail sales of the game (193 574 units as of July 23rd).

Seiken Densetsu Collection had a much more limited digital debut, with 4 721 units sold. Not really surprising, given the limited sales (it still sold better than expected). Finally, The Alliance Alive only sold 2 692 units on the Nintendo eShop: again, not really surprising given the limited sales.
