Japan: more sales data for Week 22, 2017, May 2017 (Media Create, Dengeki, Famitsu)

Week 22 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 22, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 327 000 units, which is 122.20% of Week 21 sales. Thanks to the release of several notable titles, Software sales actually exceeded 300 000 units for the very first time in 4 weeks.

Week 22, May (Dengeki)

Dengeki reports that Seiken Densetsu Collection sold about 21 000, which is quite the discrepancy with Media Create Famitsu (29 000 and 30 000 units respectively). The sell-through ratio is about 50%, similar to Famitsu’s 40-60% estimate.

For May, Dengeki reports an increase in Hardware sales, but a drop in Software sales (compared to May 2016):

  • Hardware: 710 000 units (+24.6%) / 19.2 billion Yen (+29.3%)
  • Software: 3 080 000 units (-31.5%) / 17.69 billion Yen (-34%)
  • Overall:  36.8 billion Yen (-11.4%)

The Nintendo Switch sold about 330 000 units (46.4% of total Hardware sales during the month), generating 9.8 billion Yen (51.3% of total Hardware sales during the month). Software-wise, about 800 000 units were sold (26% of total Software sales in May), generating 2.9 billion Yen in revenue (27.7% market share). Both Mario Kart 8 and The Legend of Zelda led sales during the month.

While the Nintendo Switch sold pretty well in May (despite the shortages), it’s not the case of the Nintendo 3DS and the PlayStation 4, which had driving the market so far. Here’s some data:

  • Nintendo 3DS (Hardware): 140 000 units (-19.2%) / 170 000 units if Nintendo 2DS is included (-3%)
  • Nintendo 3DS (Software): 1.23 million units (-31%)
  • PlayStation 4 (Hardware): 160 000 units (-23.9%)
  • PlayStation 4 (Software): 690 000 units (-49%)

The Dengeki journalist certainly hopes that the release of Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete on July 29th will help both platforms recover, which is pretty crucial for the market as a whole.

May 2017 (Famitsu)

May was a pretty poor month for the Japanese market as a whole, as seen with the Top 5 Software: only one game managed to sell over 100 000 units. Nintendo platforms almost managed to grab all 5 spots, but the PlayStation 4 version of Ys VIII was there to prevent that.

01./01. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe <RCE> (Nintendo) {2017.04.28} (¥5.980) – 162.733 / 442.962 (-42%)
02./02. [3DS] Monster Hunter Double Cross <ACT> (Capcom) {2017.03.18} (¥5.800) – 61.400 / 1.606.124 (-78%)
03./04. [3DS] Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission X <TBL> (Bandai Namco Games) {2017.04.27} (¥5.700) – 55.537 / 148.346 (-40%)
04./05. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild # <ADV> (Nintendo) {2017.03.03} (¥6.980) – 39.856 / 433.582 (-54%)
05./00. [PS4] Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana <RPG> (Nihon Falcom) {2017.05.25} (¥6.800) – 30.764 / NEW

This month, the Nintendo 3DS takes 2 of the Top 5 spots, and the Nintendo Switch also takes 2.

  1. 3DS – 2
  2. NSW – 2
  3. PS4 – 1

Nintendo was the most successful publisher, with more games sold than for the other two publishers in the Top 3… combined.

  1. Nintendo – 389.000
  2. Bandai Namco Games – 116.000
  3. Capcom – 96.000

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch dominated sales, but it sold half as well as in April. The Nintendo 3DS dropped to #3 because of the PlayStation 4, with sales dropping by almost 50%.

Finally, Famitsu reports that Software sales for the Nintendo Switch topped 262 000 in May. As for Nintendo games as a whole, 3 321 000 units were sold between January and May this year, as opposed to 2 589 000 units last year during the same year.
