Japan: more sales data for Week 50, Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki, more (Media Create, Dengeki)
Media Create – Week 50
Yesterday, Media Create released its weekly report for video game sales in Japan, providing us with more sales data for Week 50. During that week, Software sales topped 1 441 000 units, and Hardware sales topped 257 000 units, which is 127.79% and 111.34% of Week 49 sales respectively: a noticeable increase quite obviously attributed to the holiday period.
But while Week on Week data shows us growth, comparing sales with the same week last year shows us a drop: Software and Hardware sales during Week 50 2016 only amount to 73.49% and 78.68% of sales during the same week last year. For Hardware, the main culprit is the Wii U, with about 74 000 units less!
As for Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki, it sold about 338 000 units, with a sell-through ratio of 77.32% (which is pretty good). As comparison, Yo-kai Watch 2: Shin Uchi sold over 1.2 million units, which was pretty close to the two original versions (Yo-kai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke, with over 1.3 million units).
Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki sold half as many units as Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura (over 632 000 units at launch), so the drop is quite noticeable.

Dengeki – Week 50
First, here’s sales data for individual version of certain games:
- Pokémon Sun – 103 322 units (1 334 617 units)
- Pokémon Moon – 86 050 units (1 237 352 units)
- Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi – 3 806 units (661 825 units)
- Puzzle & Dragons X: Ryuu no Shou — 3 256 units (113 704 units)
- Puzzle & Dragons X: Kami no Shou — 3 194 units (113 342 units)
Dengeki also shares some details about Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki, which sold about 324 000 units (sell-through ratio: 70%): that’s 25.3% of what Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura sold at launch. The sales ratio between Yo-kai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke and Yo-kai Watch 2: Shin Uchi was 84.2% (the former sold 3.2 million units, and the latter 2.7 million units).
Based on how previous games sold, Dengeki estimates that Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki could end up selling 1.01 million units, but with how the popularity of the Yo-kai Watch series has been dropping this year, it doesn’t look like a sealed deal.
They’re expecting total Software sales to top 3 million units during Week 51 (which isn’t too surprising, as it’s the biggest week of the year).
Dengeki reports that Hardware sales are down by 13.7% with 257 000 units, while Software sales are up by 25.3% with 1.361 million units. About the Nintendo 3DS specifically, Hardware sales increased by 30.7% (139 000 units, including the Nintendo 2DS), while Software sales increased by 90.9% with 976 000 units sold… not surprising during the holiday period!
