Japan: more sales data for Week 21 2018, May 2018 (Media Create, Dengeki)

More sales data from Japan, with the latest reports from Media Create and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 21)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 21, 2018. It reveals that total Software sales topped 387 000 units, which is 177.44% of Week 20 sales. Sales of previously released games dropped very slightly (96% of Week 20 sales), but it’s thanks to new games that Software sales are on the rise.

Indeed, Media Create report that Week 21 sales account for 905.86% of Week 20 sales: that’s 9 times more than during the previous week! Then again, sales of new games were really low during Week 20, so it’s no wonder that they would skyrocket with popular new releases! While the market definitely remains a bit feverish, it’s still a slight improvement over the past few weeks and the usual post-Golden Week drops.

  • [PS4] [NSW] [PSV] Liar Princess and the Blind Prince (Nippon Ichi Software) – 40%. Average debut.

Dengeki (Week 21, May 2018)

This week, Dengeki report about 8 000 units sold for Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 + 2 on Nintendo Switch.

During Week 21, there was no less than 17 entries in the Top 20, so it’s no big surprise Software sales would increase. Unfortunately, this had but a limited impact on Hardware sales:

  • Hardware: 58 000 units (+5%)
  • Software: 375 000 units (+79.8%)

Also, just like Famitsu today, Dengeki shared some data for May (April 30th to May 27th). They actually mirror Week 21 sales, with Hardware sales dropping, but Software sales rising:

  • Hardware: 270 000 units (-5.8% Year on Year) / 8 billion Yen (+1% Year on Year). Sales are actually up by value due to the higher price of the consoles that are actually selling (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, as opposed to the much cheaper Nintendo 3DS)
  • Software: 1 360 000 units (+13.9% Year on Year) / 9.1 billion Yen (34.2% Year on Year)
  • Total: 17.1 billion Yen (+16.4% Year on Year).

Dengeki point out that it’s the first time in 3 months that the market is up Year on Year, which is quite ironical given May is one of the slowest months of the year for sales.

Here’s the Top 5 Software for May 2018:

  1. [NSW] Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Nintendo) – 149 000 units
  2. [PS4] Dark Souls Remastered (From Software) – 79 000 units
