Japan: more sales data for Week 16 2018, Nintendo Labo, Nintendo Switch (Media Create, Dengeki)

More sales data from Japan, with the latest reports from Media Create and Dengeki!

Media Create (Week 16)

Last week, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 16, 2018. It reveals that total Software sales topped 420 000 units, which is 133.91% of Week 15 sales: a noticeable increase mostly due to the large number of releases. There was only 3 in Week 15, but during Week 16, there was 14 of them.

Those new releases also sold more: sales topped 198 000 units, as opposed to only 62 000 units during the previous week. Media Create points out that it’s the first time in 3 weeks that Software sales are on the rise.

The main new release was Nintendo Labo, which sold a total of 119 000 units, with about 90 000 units for the Variety Kit, and 29 000 units for the Robot Kit. The sell-through ratio is pretty low: only 30%, which is due to retailers having high expectations for this game, but also the Golden Week drawing near.

Despite Nintendo Labo releasing, Nintendo Switch sales didn’t increase. In fact, they went down: the game didn’t really drive sales. Since Nintendo Labo is a unique title, more akin to an educational product than a full-fledged game, Media Create is going to pay particular attention to its sales in the future, especially during Golden Week and the Summer holidays.

Dengeki (Week 16, Fiscal Year 2017)

Dengeki report slightly lower for Nintendo Labo: 112 000 units, with an even lower sell-through ratio (25%). Just like Media Create, they’re going to pay attention to how the game sells in the upcoming weeks and months, to see if it become well-accepted by users.

In their preview two reports, Dengeki talked about the gap in sales between popular games and publishers, which was wider than ever. And that gap is also clearly visible on Nintendo Switch.

During the past Fiscal Year, total Software sales for the Nintendo Switch topped 9.2 million units, spread over 74 titles: that’s a 28.3% market share, and an average of 124 324 units sold. But the thing is, 57.9% of those sales are due to only 3 games: Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

In fact, Nintendo alone account for 79.9% of Software sales on Nintendo Switch, leaving only 20.1% for the 62 third-party games released… not the best of performance for them (that’s an average of 0.3% for the market share of each individual title).

For Dengeki, this isn’t really surprising that Nintendo would lead sales, since the Nintendo Switch is a relatively new platform. However, if that domination keeps on going, and third-party games don’t sell more, this will inevitably lead to third-party publishers to move away from the Nintendo Switch. As a result, less games will be made for the platform, which will hurt the Nintendo Switch as a whole.

They hope that third-party publishers will also find success on the console, which is only going to be beneficial to the Nintendo Switch market as a whole.
