Japan: more sales data for Week 12 2018 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create (Week 12)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 12, 2018. It reveals that total Software sales topped 582 000 units, which is 98.51% of Week 11 sales: a rather limited drop, that could have been worse if not for the public holiday on Wednesday that boosted sales of previously released games.

Indeed, despite the many new releases, new games only account for 218 000 of the 582 000 units sold during Week 12. Fortunately, sales of previously released games increased significantly: they topped 364 000 units, which is roughly 140% of Week 11 sales. Overall, Software sales were flat.

Media Create (Day-1 Sell-through)

This week, we have the Day-1 sell-through for just one, lone Nintendo Switch game:

  • [NSW] Ao no Kanata no Four Rhythm for Nintendo Switch (Sprite) – 30%. A rather low sell-through, though according to the developers, the game was already in the black thanks to pre-orders and the first shipment.

Dengeki (Week 12)

During its second week, Kirby Star Allies sold about 88 000 units, bringing total sales to over 317 000, and therefore allowing it to reach 300 000 units sold in less than two weeks. There were quite a few new releases, but none of them sold enough to make the cute pink ball drop from the top spot.

As for Detective Pikachu, it had a decent opening with 41 000 units sold during the first 3 days. Finally, Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition sold 24 000 units at launch.

Hardware-wise, Nintendo Switch sales have been slightly improving over the past few weeks, and is “catching up” with the PlayStation 4 that received a major boost in sales thanks to Monster Hunter World. This week, it sold about 52 000 units, which accounts for 58.3% of total Hardware sales.

Dengeki don’t forget to point out that next week, the Nintendo Switch will reach the 4 million units sold milestone (it’s currently sitting at ~3 990 000 units). And with the start of Spring holidays for elementary and junior high-school students, they expect to see an increase in sales during the last week of the Fiscal Year.
