[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 9, 2017 (Feb. 27 – March 5) [Top 50], Famitsu sales for February, 2017

Media Create (Week 9)

Week 9 saw the release of the Nintendo Switch, and so there’s quite a lot of entries in the Top 20 from Media Create. Unsurprisingly, the best-seller this week is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, with 186 379 units sold on Nintendo Switch, which is quite low considering the console itself sold over 330 000 units.

Still, this remains a good performance for launch title, which should keep selling on the long run. But it’s clear that not everyone buying a Nintendo Switch is interested in that new Zelda game, as it remains readily available in stores (no shortages limited sales).

As for the Wii U version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it sold 44 602 units according to Media Create, which means that combined, the game sold 230 981 units.

Here’s how previous console Zelda games sold in Japan (NB: Famitsu data):

  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker — 287 346 units sold at launch (742 609 units LTD)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii) — 145 068 units sold at launch (554 109 units LTD)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (GC) — 70 000 units LTD (was only available via Nintendo Store)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword — 194 894 units (349 143 units LTD)

As we can see, sales for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are in line with the most recent entries in the series. But it remains to be seen how the game will sale in the long run: will it keep selling like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess did, or will it quickly drop off the charts? Since it launched alongside a brand new platform, it should be the former (The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword came out when the Wii was pretty much done for).

The second most popular launch title for the Nintendo Switch is 1-2-Switch, which sold 79 536 units. It’s a pretty solid performance, though sales on the long run remains uncertain. However, there’s no doubt it will manage to top 100 000 units during Week 10 (or Week 11 at the very latest).

Super Bomberman R was the third most popular launch title for the Nintendo Switch, and the best-selling third-party game. It sold 36 623 units at launch, which is quite low… but not for the Bomberman series. Indeed, this is the best debut for a Bomberman game since Bomberman Land on… PlayStation 1 (back in 2000), with about 32 000 units sold.

As for Dragon Quest Heroes I & II, it sold 25 606 units, which is a decent result for a late and expensive late port. This is nothing to write home about though, and there’s no doubt it will be gone from the Media Create Top 20 by next week.

Same for Puyo Puyo Tetris, which sold 12 854 units. As comparison, this is “only” 4 000 units less than Puyo Puyo Chronicle on Nintendo 3DS at launch (about 16 000 units according to Famitsu)… it just shows how poorly both games sold, though Puyo Puyo Tetris has a good “excuse”… it’s a late port, released at launch for a brand new platform.

Unfortunately, the following launch titles didn’t chart (and sold less 5 481 units each):

  • Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence with Power-Up Kit (Koei-Tecmo)
  • I am Setsuna (Square-Enix)
  • Disgaea 5 (Nippon Ichi Software)

Finally, the last entry on Nintendo platforms this week is Doraemon the Movie: Nobita no Nankyoku Kachikochi Daibouken, which sold only 5 481. A pretty poor debut, but not surprising for a licenced game by FuRyu.

Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 Professional is the only non-Nintendo Switch game in the Top 10 from Media Create, and it sold 13 426 units. It sales actually went up this week (+3%), which is a pretty positive result. So far, sales have held pretty well, and since launch, 163 058 units have been sold. They should easily top 200 000 units within the next couple of months.

Next, here’s how the games in the second half of the Top 20 sold:

  •  12./06. [3DS] Pokemon Sun / Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 12.292 / 3.189.271 (-9%). Sales remain steady… nothing much to say about that one, for now at least!
  • 16./11. [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo) – 7.042 / 983.867 (+0%). This game is selling pretty steadily, even during weeks without any public holidays, which bodes well for the Golden Week, in late April / early May;
  • 18./14. [3DS] Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki (Level 5) – 5.980 / 681.240 (-2%). Sales are pretty steady, and should stay that way until another version or a new game is announced.

Media Create – Hardware

According to Media Create, the Nintendo Switch sold 329 152 units during its launch week, which is slightly less than the number reported by Famitsu (about 331 000 units). As such, for our comments about the Nintendo Switch sales, we invite you to check out this post!

That being said, there are two interesting things to point out:

  • so far, the Nintendo Switch has sold more than any other platform for 2017 (with the exception of the PlayStation 4, that it should overtake in the upcoming weeks… albeit, temporarily);
  • thanks to the release of the Nintendo Switch, total Hardware sales for 2017 are finally above their 2016 levels.

Also, Nintendo Switch sales next week are most likely going to see a major drop, due to shortages. New shipments are expected for this week-end, but it doesn’t look like there will be many units available.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales are slightly up this week with 23 848 units sold, thanks to the usual end-of-month “boost”. Unfortunately, they’re still below their 2016 levels, which isn’t all that surprising at this point in the 3DS lifecycle… At least, sales didn’t drop off a cliff, and with Monster Hunter XX releasing next week, they should improve noticeably in the near future.

It is too early to say that the Nintendo Switch did or didn’t have an impact on Nintendo 3DS sales, especially as the line-up of the former remains rather sparse so far.

As for the Wii U, its sales actually went up this week, from 464 units to 565 units. A pretty amusing fact, but one without any sort of significance, as the Wii U is pretty much dead at this point. That being said, it looks like Media Create is going to keep tracking it for now (they most definitely will stop after Week 52, this year).

Famitsu (February 2017)

And without any major release that month, Nintendo was still the third most successful publisher in Japan:

  • Square Enix – 381.000
  • Bandai Namco Games – 273.000
  • Nintendo – 253.000

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo 3DS wasn’t the best-selling platform due to the PlayStation 4 having a pretty good month. As for the Wii U, sales collapses some more, and they already were not all that great in February 2016…
