[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 7, 2018 (February 12th – February 18th) [Top 50]

Media Create

Week 7 saw the release of quite a few games, but only one was on Nintendo platforms: Bayonetta. It’s off to a pretty muted start, with about 20 000 units sold. There were two editions, with the “Non-Stop Climax” one including both Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2. It was the most popular one, with nearly 12 000 units sold.

The thing is, this edition was completely sold out, and unless you managed to secure a copy right after pre-orders went live, chances are you didn’t manage to get it at all.

It’s likely the game would have sold more had Nintendo shipped more copies of the Non-Stop Climax edition, which clearly was the most popular of the two… not surprising since it includes the two games, and is the only way (anywhere in the world!) to get the Nintendo Switch version of Bayonetta 1 on a physical format. Also, there’s no free copy of Bayonetta 1 with the stand-alone version of Bayonetta 2.

This seems to indicate that Nintendo don’t see much potential for the series in Japan, as Bayonetta should be able to sell more on an actually desirable console (as opposed to the Wii U). Of course, there’s also digital sales to take into account, and we don’t know how the game is going to sell in the long run, so it’s probably too early to write that one off.

In comparison, the Wii U version of Bayonetta 2 sold about 33 000 units during its launch week in Japan (Famitsu data), though that was on 4 days instead of 2.

Meanwhile, the other Nintendo Switch games in the Top 20 from Media Create are still selling at a steady pace. Of course, Splatoon 2 is one of them, with 21 815 units sold this week: that’s only -7% compared to last week. It reached the 2 million units milestone during Week 6, and it really doesn’t look like it’s going to stop selling any time soon. 2 042 844 units sold have been sold since launch.

The same can be said about Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: its sale are flat this week (+0%), with 19 280 units sold. As a multiplayer-focused game, and a pretty well-received one to boot (with a significant amount of content: it has the most tracks for a Mario Kart game, thanks to the included DLC, after all), it’s no wonder sales have been so steady… especially without a new Mario Kart on the horizon! 1 346 387 units have been sold since launch.

Sales for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle aren’t quite as strong as other Nintendo Switch games in the Top 20 from Media Create, but they remain quite steady, which is a really positive sign (especially for a single player game). It sold 12 776 additional units this week, bringing the total since launch to 142 591 units. It will reach 200 000 units within the next couple of months (most likely in April, at this rate), with >300 000 units as possible LTD sales.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

  • 11./09. [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo) – 12.640 / 1.614.506 (-9%). One of the Nintendo Switch games enjoying steady sales;
  • 12./10. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 11.764 / 871.528 (-3%). Sales have been surprisingly good in 2018, and it doesn’t look like they’re going to slow down any time soon. As of this week, it’s sold over 1 million units at retail, combined with the Wii U version. However, we’re missing many weeks of sales data for that version, so it’s highly 1 million was actually reached several weeks ago;
  • 15./12. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) – 9.358 / 1.558.042 (-3%). It’s been selling pretty steadily in 2018 (despite anemic sales for the Nintendo 3DS, Hardware-wise). Will the stand-alone version be able to reach 2 million units at retail? We will find out in a couple of months!
  • 18./13. [3DS] Mario Party: The Top 100 (Nintendo) – 5.842 / 161.624 (-9%). This one is also selling pretty steadily, and 200 000 units LTD is a lock at this point;
  • 19./18. [NSW] Arms (Nintendo) – 4.234 / 369.040 (-2%). This one should reach 400 000 units at retail within the next few months;
  • 20./16. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 4.194 / 399.757 (-6%). 400 000 units milestone missed by only 243 units!

Media Create – Hardware

This week again, there’s not much to say about Hardware sales in Japan. Nintendo Switch sales are slightly down, with about 39 000 units sold this week. It doesn’t look like Nintendo is willing to ship more units at the moment, which is not surprising given how light the Q1 line-up has been so far. At least, shortages are not nearly as bad as they were last year!

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales are once again flat, which is hardly a surprise given the total of lack of new releases. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely to change any time soon!
