[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 49, 2017 (December 4th – December 10th) [Top 50]

Media Create

Week 49 saw the release of quite a few games in Japan, but there’s only one on Nintendo platforms in the Top 20 from Media Create.

That lone game is Sumikko Gurashi: Sumiko Park e Youkoso, that had a decent debut with 9 435 units sold during the first few days. It’s actually pretty close to the first week sales of the very first Sumikko Gurashi on Nintendo 3DS (about 10 000 units, according to Famitsu). It will be interesting to see how that one sells in the long run, since (almost) all previous Nintendo 3DS entries went on to sell over 100 000 units).

This week, again, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon enjoyed strong sales, with:

• stand-alone: 106 094 units this week (-1%), and 1 050 168 units since launch;
• dual-pack: 11 198 units this week (+3%) / 22 396 units this week if counted as two units, and 290 149 units since launch (580 298 units if counted as two units)
• combined: 117 292 units this week (128 490 units if dual-pack counted as two units) / 1 340 317 units since launch (1 630 466 units if dual-pack counted as two units).

It’s quite interesting to see that, this time around, the dual-pack isn’t limited at all: in fact, it’s the one SKU that saw an increase in sales this week. That’s quite the contrast with the first dual-pack (for Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire), that was extremely hard to find in stores if you had not pre-ordered.

It looks like Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon really will not have any trouble topping 2 million units this very year.

Now that the holiday season is in full swing, several key titles on Nintendo Switch are on the rise, starting with Super Mario Odyssey. It almost topped 100 000 units this week, but fell short (though not by much): 95 816 units were sold (+56%). It’s pretty safe to assume that sales will top 100 000 units next week, though! And also next week, it will become the second million-seller on Nintendo Switch (it’s currently at 949 470 units sold).

Splatoon 2, the first million-seller on Nintendo Switch, is also enjoying strong sales with 50 594 units sold this week (+40%). That brings the total since launch to 1 460 370 units, which means the game will top 1.5 million units next week.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe saw an even bigger increase in sales: +42% compared to Week 48. That translates to 33 315 units sold this week, and 894 553 units since launch. It looks like the holiday boost should allow this game to become the third million-seller on Nintendo Switch before the end of the year!

As for Xenoblade Chronicles 2, it (unfortunately) had the typical second week drop for a JRPG. Sales are down by 80%, to 19 678 units. Those sales could not really be considered bad per se, but they certainly could be better. We will have to see how the game fares throughout 2018, and whether it can outsell the previous entries on Wii and Wii U. So far, 117 409 units have been sold at retail.

Next, Kirby: Battle Royale saw a limited second week drop, thanks to the holiday boost. Sales topped 19 000 units this week (19 325 to be precise), which is a 31% drop compared to launch week. It’s now sold 47 348 units, which means it will reach 50 000 units next week (in fact, it most likely has already, by the time you read this), with 100 000 units LTD (minimum) being a likely result.

Finally, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild did see an increase in sales this week, with +23%… not due to the release of a special edition this time around! 14 342 units were sold this week, and 682 992 units since launch. Adding Wii U sales (at least 150 000 units), the total keeps closing in on the 1 million units threshold, which is pretty impressive for a 3D Zelda game in Japan.

Next, let’s take a look at the games in the second half of the Top 20:

• 12./09. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 11.878 / 306.517 (-9%). After two weeks of significant increase, sales have stabilised… not for long though, as they should go back up starting next week!
• 15./15. [3DS] Style Savvy: Styling Star (Nintendo) – 9.649 / 70.704 (+50%). It’s now pretty much guaranteed it will sell at least 100 000 units, and possibly even before the end of the year;
• 17./21. [NSW] Pokkén Tournament DX (Pokemon Co.) – 8.362 / 139.637. It makes its comeback in the Top 20 from Media Create this week, and seems poised to sell 200 000 units LTD (at the very least, it will sell 150 000 units this week);
• 19./20. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 7.604 / 295.470 (+60%). Funnily enough, it’s one of the games with the highest increase this week. It will reach 300 000 units sold next week.

This week saw a significant increase in Nintendo Switch shipments/sales, but it’s still nowhere near the levels required for shortages to become a thing of the past. Quite interestingly, there’s another significant discrepancy with Famitsu data: about 30 000 units, with Media Create reporting 164 908 units sold, and Famitsu reporting 193 000 units.

Yesterday, Nintendo announced that they were “planning to ship more units than ever before” in December, so we can expect further increases in the next couple of weeks. It’s basically guaranteed the console will top 3 million units even before the end of the year, and it definitely has a shot at outselling the Wii U pretty soon… though that will most likely happen in Early 2018 instead of this year (shortages oblige).

Unfortunately, the Nintendo 3DS is truly done for. It sold “only” 45 573 units this week: that’s only 9 000 units more than during Week 48, and 63 000 units less than last year during the same week. It looks like the handheld will have a hard time selling 100 000 units/week in December, though its best shot is during Week 51 (Christmas week).

Comparisons are not going to be pretty for December as a whole, since the Nintendo 3DS did sell pretty decently last year, for the holiday. It should not come as a surprise for such an old platform, though at least the drop will not be too harsh (at least, Hardware-wise. Software-wise, it’s going to be a different story altogether…).

Finally, the Wii U sold 70 units this week.
