[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 48, 2017 (November 27th – December 3rd) [Top 50]

Media Create

Week 48 was another (somewhat) busy week for the Japanese market, but once again, it’s not really the new releases that shone the brightest. There’s 5 of them on Nintendo platforms in the Top 20 from Media Create this week, with 2 on Nintendo 3DS, and 3 on Nintendo Switch.

Let’s start right away with the main release of the week: Xenoblade Chronicles 2, that ended up selling a respectable 97 732 units during the first 3 days on the market. That makes it the best-selling Xenoblade Chronicles game at launch in Japan, though not by much.

Here’s how the previous entries sold in Japan (NB: Famitsu data!):

  • Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii): 79 163 units at launch (163 442 units LTD)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U): 88 544 units at launch (137 470 units LTD)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3D (New Nintendo 3DS): 43 762 units (87 932 units LTD)

While there is definitely growth for the series, it’s still somewhat limited. Launching on a much healthier platform should have been pretty beneficial to Xenoblade Chronicles 2, but it seems it didn’t really make a difference (though it’s most likely too early to say for sure).

Maybe there simply isn’t a big enough audience for such a JRPG on Nintendo Switch yet (the console is still pretty hard to find in stores), in which case we could witness steady sales in the next few weeks and months. Unfortunately, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 isn’t really the kind of game to benefit from the holiday season.

Next: Kirby Battle Royale. It sold 28 023 units during its launch week, which is a fairly solid opening for a spin-off. With the holiday season in full swing, sales are bound to remain steady, and the game should be able to easily sell over 100 000 units when all is said and done.

As for Attack on Titan 2 ~Mirai no Zahyou~, it would be quite the understatement to say that it sold poorly. Only 8 353 units were sold during the first 4 days, which is more than 10 times worse than the original (89 448 units at launch). It looks like both Spike-Chunsoft and retailers were too obsessed with the sales of the original to see the inevitable collapse…

Unfortunately, it’s highly unlikely Attack on Titan 2 ~Mirai no Zahyou~ is going to have strong sales during the holiday season (like the original did), which means that total sales are going to end up way below those of the original (over 400 000 units).

By the way, Attack on Titan 2 ~Mirai no Zahyou~ managed to sell even worse than Attack on Titan: Shichi-kara no Dasshutsu, the adventure game from Koei-Tecmo released earlier this year.

As for the Resident Evil Revelations Collection, it had a decent debut with 6 540 units sold during the first few days. Nothing to write home about, but a late port of a collection of games already available on other platforms wasn’t going to sell gangbusters anyway. Sell-through ratio (40 to 60%) shows that expectations were not too high to begin with.

Finally, the Nintendo Switch version of Nobunaga’s Ambition: Taishi had a decent debut, with 5 636 units sold. Unfortunately, it’s significantly worse than the PlayStation 4 version (27 230 units), though the sell-through ratio is similar (40-60% according to Famitsu).

It looks like both retailers and Koei-Tecmo expected the Nintendo Switch version to sell less (which is understandable: the audience for that kind of game is pretty limited on Nintendo Switch at the moment.

This week, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon enjoyed strong sales, and despite the drop, the stand-alone versions managed to sell over 100 000 units:

  • stand-alone: 107 657 units (944 074 units since launch)
  • dual-pack: 10 872 units (21 744 if you count it as two units) (278 952 units since launch, 557 904 units if counted as two units)
  • total: 1 223 026 units (1 501 978 units if you count the dual-pack as two units)

It looks like Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon could reach 2 million units this very year, provided the holiday boost is strong enough. We will see in the next couple of weeks whether this is a possibility or not.

Unlike Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey saw its sales drop this week, which is partly due to Nintendo shipping few Nintendo Switch bundles. The game sold 61 596 units this week, which is still a pretty good result. It brings it closer to the 1 million mark: it’s currently sitting at 853 654 units, with the holiday season now in full swing (and the biggest weeks of the year still to come).

Meanwhile, Splatoon 2 is trucking along merrily, with +20% this week (36 246 units). The game has now sold over 1.4 million units since launch (1 409 776 units, to be precise), and it looks like it will reach 1.5 million units within the next couple of weeks. It will be interesting to see if sales are going to reach 100 000 units/week during the peak week of the holiday season (Week 51).

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe enjoyed a similar increase in sales (+24%), with 23 388 units sold. It’s now sold 861 238 units since launch, and whether or not it can reach 1 million units this year will depend on how strong the holiday boost is (and how many Nintendo Switch consoles Nintendo can ship to retailers!).

Another game that saw a noticeable increase in sales this week is Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo, which saw yet another increase: +21% (that follows a 204% increase during the launch week of Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp)! As we pointed out last week, this game is poised to have a great holiday season, which is more than remarkable as it was originally released back in 2012.

Since launch, the Welcome amiibo edition has sold over 294 639 units.

Finally, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the few Nintendo Switch games that didn’t see an increase in sales, but it’s almost exclusively due to the launch of the Explorer’s Edition last week. Sales remain pretty strong, with 11 634 units sold. It’s likely they will stay above the 10 000/week threshold until the end of the year.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 are faring:

  • 15./12. [3DS] Style Savvy: Styling Star (Nintendo) – 6.450 / 61.055 (+3%). It looks like the holiday boost is starting to have a positive impact on sales;
  • 20./18. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo)  – 4.758 / 287.866 (+21%). It looks like parents are picking this game alongside the Nintendo Switch for Christmas.

This week, Nintendo shipped less Nintendo Switch consoles than last week… though only according to Media Create. There’s always discrepancies between Famitsu and Media Create, but it’s particularly noticeable this time around, because the former reports an increase in sales, while the latter reports a drop.

124 700 units were sold this week according to Media Create, bringing the total since launch to 2.5 million units. And since it’s safe to expect sales will keep increasing during the next few weeks, it’s pretty likely (though not guaranteed yet) that the Nintendo Switch will have outsold the Wii U by the end of the year or in Early 2018 at the latest.

Unfortunately, the Nintendo 3DS only saw a very moderate increase in sales: they went from 34 886 units to 36 238 units this week. It’s clear by now that the console has reached saturation, and the Nintendo Switch sucking out the air out of all other platforms isn’t really helping. Of course, it’s not really something for Nintendo to worry about: the Nintendo 3DS has run its course, quite simply… it’s not dying an early death, quite the opposite.

Based on the current sales trajectory, it seems unlikely the Nintendo 3DS will top 25 million units in Japan alone, though it should be able to reach 24 million units sometime next year. And as mentioned previously, it’s now guaranteed the handheld will end up with lower sales for 2017 than for 2016, which was actually something pretty normal to expect at the beginning of the year.

The thing is, sales during the first half of the year seemed to indicate the Nintendo 3DS was going to sell more in 2017, but sales during the second half of the year (specifically, from September onwards) suffered a harsher drop than last year during the same period. This is in part due to the lackluster line-up for the holiday season, but also the fact the Nintendo 3DS has pretty much reached saturation in Japan.

Finally, the Wii U sold 45 units this week.
