[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 45, 2016 (Nov. 7 – 13) [Top 50]

This week, quite a few games came out in Japan, and some of them were on Nintendo 3DS.

The first one is PriPara Mezameyo! Megami no Dress Design, which sold 28 865 units during its first week on the market. It’s a rather decent debut, which is in line with the previous game on Nintendo 3DS (PriPara Mezase! Idol Grand Prix No.1!, with 30 805 units sold during the first week according to Famitsu).

The second entry of the week on Nintendo 3DS is Beyblade Burst, which sold 16 516 units during its first week on the market. Unfortunately, the previous Beyblade game was released on Nintendo DS almost 6 years ago, so a direct comparison doesn’t really make much sense. It’s certainly a decent debut, especially for a FuRyu game, but the game is most definitely going to drop out of the Media Create Top 20 pretty fast.

The third and last entry of the week (at least for Media Create’s Top 20) is Saiki Kusuo no Ψ Nan: Shijou Ψ Dai no Ψ Nan!?, which had a mediocre debut at #20 with only 3 519. Bandai-Namco’s licenced games are always hit or miss, but this one is quite clearly a miss.

Overall, Week 45 was a rather slow week for Nintendo platforms… the calm before the the PokéStorm, one might say! Here’s how the various Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games in the Media Create Top 20 have performed:

• 12./12. [3DS] Mario Party: Star Rush (Nintendo) – 6.630 / 57.876 (-37%). Until the holiday period begins, we will not see any real improvement in sales. The release of Pokémon Sun and Moon next week might boost its sales a bit, though;
• 13./11. [3DS] Monster Hunter Stories (Capcom) – 6.364 / 266.788 (-46%). While it has already sold over 260 000 units, sales on the long run seem a bit low. In the upcoming weeks, we will see if Pokémon Sun and Moon will have a negative or positive impact on its sales;
• 17./13. [WIU] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Microsoft Game Studios) – 4.688 / 171.893 (-18%). Sales did drop this week, but this version is still selling better than its PSV counterpart.

Pokémon Sun and Moon comes out on Friday in Japan, and it’s expected to sell pretty well. Will it reach 2 million units during the first week, like Pokémon X and Y did?

Media Create – Hardware

While Software sales are down this week, Hardware sales are up for both the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS. The former sold 2 756 units this week, which is about 700 more than during Week 44… but 15 000 units less than during the same week in 2015. Since Nintendo has already announced the remaining two Premium Packs will soon be discontinued, there’s really nothing to look forward to regarding Wii U sales.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales once again increased slightly this week, which is quite obviously due to anticipation for Pokémon Sun and Moon. That also means that last week’s increase was indeed due to both the public holiday on Thursday and anticipation for the last mainline entry in the Pokémon series.

Media Create reports 32 301 units sold for the Nintendo 3DS during Week 45, which is less than 1 000 units more than Week 44, but still ahead of 2015 sales. And once again, this Year on Year increase is almost entirely due to the Nintendo 2DS, which is the model where most of the increase in sale is concentrated this week.

Pokémon Sun and Moon comes out this Friday, and it’s expected to boost Nintendo 3DS sales. However, since this is the third mainline entry to be released on Nintendo’s handheld (including Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire), the impact will be more limited than you would expect for such a major release.

One thing’s for sure, though: the Nintendo 3DS is going to sell pretty well next week, and the Nintendo 2DS will also be a pretty popular model (it’s most likely when its total sales will top 100 000 units). Will it be enough for the Nintendo 3DS to get back its title of best-selling console in Japan? We’ll see next week!

So far, the Nintendo 3DS has sold 21 413 336 units according to Media Create. To reach 22 million units before the end of the year, it needs to sell 586 664 units during the next 7 weeks. In other words, it needs 83 809 units / week, on average.

Finally, Media Create reports that the Nintendo Classic Mini: Family Computer sold 261 381 units (as opposed to 262 961 for Famitsu).
