[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 43, 2017 (October 23rd – 29th) [Top 50]

Media Create

This week was a pretty busy one for the video game market in Japan, with no less than 8 entries in the Top 20 by Media Create this week. The star is quite obviously Super Mario Odyssey, which sold 462 038 units during the first 3 days on the market. That’s by far the biggest debut for a 3D Mario game in Japan.

That number is significantly lower than the one provided earlier today by Famitsu (510 000 units), and there’s several reasons for that.

First, there’s the usual tracker discrepancy, as they do not all track the same set of stores. Though more important than that is the fact Famitsu does track download cards (something neither Media Create or Dengeki do), and since the game did sell out at a few stores, this could have led a higher number of people to go for a download card instead of a retail copy.

With such a strong opening, Super Mario Odyssey is poised to reach 1 million units sold this very year, unless sales drop like a rock starting next week (though the usual second week drop could worse than usual, depending on how many Nintendo Switch consoles and bundles Nintendo ships to retailers).

Could it reach 2 million units LTD? It’s too early to tell, but if Super Mario Odyssey keeps selling on the long run, like Super Mario 3D Land (and Super Mario World) did, it very well could!

The second entry of the week for Nintendo platforms is Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux, which is off to a surprisingly good start. It sold 60 848 units during the first few days, which is roughly 2/3 of that the original did at launch, on Nintendo DS (about 90 000 units).

With how the other Atlus games have been faring this year on Nintendo 3DS (both Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 and Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology underperformed), this is pretty good news for Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux. It looks like Atlus’ announcement for Shin Megami Tensei V came at just the right moment, generating buzz and interest in the Shin Megami Tensei series.

The original version went to sell over 142 000 units (according to Famitsu data), but it’s unlikely this remake will do the same. Depending on how hard the second week drop is, it could have a shot at reaching 100 000 units, at the very least!

The third entry of the week for Nintendo platforms is Idol Time PriPara: Yume All-Star Live!, with an average debut. It sold about 14 885 units during launch week, which is less than what the previous game did, last year.

The fourth entry of the week for Nintendo platforms is 12-Sai. Torokeru Puzzle Futari no Harmony, with only 6 195 units sold at launch. This is half what the previous two games did on Nintendo 3DS, which is probably not a surprise given the switch in genre, and the fact the anime series is now over.

Finally, the fith and final entry of the week for Nintendo platforms is the budget re-release of Rune Factory 4, which managed to chart with 3 567 units sold. A pretty satisfying result for Marvelous, as budget re-releases often do not even manage to chart in the Top 20.

The massive increase for Nintendo Switch shipments had a positive impacts on several Nintendo Switch games in the Top 20, starting with Splatoon 2. Its sales increased by 36%, reaching 22 445 units this week (1 271 451 units since launch). With the holiday seasons starting in a few weeks, we can expect to see similar increases on a regular basis in the near future.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe also benefitted from the launch of Super Mario Odyssey, with sales increasing by 25%. It sold 13 936 units this week, which brings it pretty close to the 800 000 units threshold (that it should reach within the next couple of weeks).

Next, here’s how the games in the second half of the Top 20 have been faring:

  • 13./10. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 6.307 / 622.690 (+16%). This game has been seeing increases in sales every time Nintendo Switch shipments were on the rise, so it’s not surprising to see the same happened this time again;
  • 16./11. [NSW] Pokken Tournament DX (Pokemon Co.) – 4.588 / 106.947 (-12%). No increase, but sales remain steady enough: a good sign, what with the approaching holiday season and all;
  • 18./18. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 3.815 / 260.228 (+39%). It looks like the Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp announcement, combined with the usual payday boost, have had a positive impact on the sales of the greenest of ever-green games on Nintendo 3DS!
  • 20./12. [3DS] Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions (Nintendo) – 3.480 / 46.575 (-32%). This one should drop from the Top 20 next week, but should pop back up once the holiday season kicks in.

As expected, Nintendo did ship a loooot more Nintendo Switch consoles for the launch of Super Mario Odyssey, with sales topping 126 000 units. That’s the second best week for the console (even better than when Splatoon 2 was released), and the best post-launch one. And the fun thing is, shortages are still there, and are not going away until next year (not with the holiday season around the corner).

Now, it will be interesting to see how many Nintendo Switch consoles will be shippped during the next few weeks, especially the next one. The drop wasn’t too hard during the week following Splatoon 2, but that was during the Summer holidays. The holiday season is yet to start, so Nintendo may be tempted to pace themselves, ahead of what is going to be a pretty busy December.

Thanks to the launch of Super Mario Odyssey, and the increased shipments, the Nintendo Switch sold enough to reach 2 million units. It’s the 6th fastest console to do so in Japan, with the Nintendo 3DS doing it two weeks earlier. Of course, if not for the endless shortages that have plagued the console since launch, it would have reached 2 million units sold faster.

While the Nintendo Switch keeps selling like hot pancakes, the same cannot be said of the Nintendo 3DS, which has been in a bit of a slump since the end of the Summer holidays. It sold “only” 17 283 units this week, which is once again less than last year during the same week (25 660 units).

Unfortunately, the gap with 2016 sales keeps getting smaller, and it’s unlikely to change any time soon. Yes, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon is releasing on November 17th, but it’s highly doubtful it will have as strong an impact on sales as Pokémon Sun and Moon did… and that’s not even taking into account that the former is bound to sell (significantly) less than the latter, since it’s not a brand new entry or even a remake.

What’s more, the line-up for the holiday period does seem quite weaker this year, compared 2016 (no Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, for example). At this rate, it’s not clear whether 2017 will end up on a rise for the Nintendo 3DS or not. If it doesn’t, then at the very least, the drop should not be too hard. 2018, one the other, is going to be an entirely different story…

Finally, the Wii U sold 41 units this week.
