[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 41, 2016 (Oct. 10 – 16) [Top 50]

Update: added the full Top 50 for Media Create!

Media Create – Software

Last week, several games came out on Nintendo platforms in Japan, but only one made it into Media Create’s Top 20… Paper Mario: Color Splash. The latest entry in the Paper Mario series had a really poor debut, with only 20 894 units sold.

That’s by far the worst debut for the Paper Mario series, as all previous titles sold more than 100 000 units during their launch week. In fact, it may not even manage to top the First Week sales of Paper Mario on Nintendo 64 (118 322 units according to Famitsu). Hopefully, holiday sales are strong enough to make that a reality, but it doesn’t look likely.

Unfortunately, such a poor result was to be expected on the Wii U, where many a popular franchises just came and cratered. What’s more, being released on Wii U so late in its lifecycle really hurt Paper Mario: Color Splash, especially since the console has been pretty much a Splatoon and Minecraft-only machine for many players for a while now.

Next, we have Monster Hunter Stories, which sold 67 133 units during its second week. That’s a much better second week than usual for a RPG, with only -52% compared to launch week according to Media Create.

Monday was a public holiday in Japan, and there’s no doubt it did help sales a fair bit, allowing total sales to top 200 000 units since launch. It will be interesting to check out the sales trajectory in the next couple of weeks, as this should give us a better idea of how successful Monster Hunter Stories really is.

It looks like the public holiday also helped several other games on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, which saw pretty stable sales this week:

  • 05/04 [3DS] Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura (Level 5) – 11.255 / 1.284.437 (-9%). There are still about 36 000 unsold units from the first week shipments;
  • 07./07. [WIU] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Microsoft Game Studios) – 6.472 / 151.101 (-5%). This version just keeps on selling, and has now topped 150 000 units sold since launch;
  • 12./10. [3DS] Puzzle & Dragons X: God Chapter / Dragon Chapter (GungHo Online Entertainment) – 5.080 / 195.639 (-3%). Sales remain pretty steady, and should top 200 000 units at retail within the next couple of weeks;
  • 14./12. [3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo) – 4.504 / 453.580 (-9%). Thanks to good public holiday sales, the latest Kirby game has now sold over 450 000 units… and the holiday period hasn’t even started yet!
  • 20./20. [WIU] Splatoon (Nintendo) – 3.101 / 1.482.283 (-7%). It made its comeback in the Media Create Top 20 last week, but it shoud not stay very long.

Super Battle For Money Sentouchuu: Kyuukyoku no Shinobu to Battle Player Choujou Kessen! is one of the games that benefited the most from the public holiday: it sales jumped by 29%, with 4 816 units sold (23 645 units since launch).

On the other hand, Dragon Ball: Fusions didn’t really benefit from the public holiday, with sales dropping by 18% and 3 407 units sold this week according to Media Create. Still, the game hasn’t left the Top 20 once since its launch in August, and while it will most likely leave it soon, it should pop back up once the holiday period starts.

Finally, the Nintendo 3DS version of LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens is nowhere to be seen in the Media Create Top 20, though Famitsu has it at 3 394 units (above the PlayStation 4 version). The Wii U version is ranked #29 (Famitsu), with 1 933 units sold.

Media Create – Hardware

Hardware-wise, sales are slightly down for both the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS this week. Wii U sales are as dead as ever, with 2 430 units sold. The release of Paper Mario: Color Splash didn’t have a noticeable impact on sales, but the writing was already on the wall even before the game launched.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, things are looking quite good: it sold 27 508 units this week, as opposed to 29 592 units last week. While a drop during a week with a public holiday is definitely a shame, it’s not really the end of the world (especially since there was no new releases this week).

What’s more, this week again, sales are slightly better than they were during the same week in 2015. Naturally, it’s thanks to the Nintendo 2DS, which sold 8 203 during Week 41 (61 465 units since launch). No doubt Nintendo is pretty happy about that, especially with the holiday period and the release of Pokémon Sun and Moon still to come.

So far, the Nintendo 3DS has sold 21 299 550 units according to Media Create. To reach 22 million units before the end of the year, it needs to sell 700 450 units during the next 11 weeks. In other words, it needs 63 677 units / week, on average.
