[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 40, 2017 (October 2nd – 8th) [Top 50]

This week was a pretty slow for the video game market in Japan, with few releases, and low sales all around… even for those new releases we just mentioned. One of them is Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions, and it’s off to a pretty disappointing start with only 25 788 units sold during the first few days according to Media Create.

For a remake released late in the lifecycle of the Nintendo 3DS (and one that does feel a bit unnecessary), one could say those sales are fairly decent… but certainly not that they’re good. Unfortunately, that’s something you could say about so many other releases on Nintendo 3DS this year.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions has by far the worst debut for a Mario & Luigi game, selling half of what Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam did (50 000 units at launch according to Famitsu). There’s no doubt Nintendo has low expectations for most Nintendo 3DS releases this year (with the exception of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, obviously), but it’s pretty clear we’re witnessing the last year of the platform.

This week saw a major drop in shipments for the Nintendo Switch, and so the various games in the Top 20 took a hit. Yet, they’re still selling pretty well, such as Splatoon 2 with 22 338 units sold this week (-25%, 1 212 901 units since launch). Naturally, sales are only going up once more Nintendo Switch consoles are shipped to retailers, as Splatoon 2 is bound to be THE star of the holiday period this year.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is also selling steadily, and was less impacted by the drop in Nintendo Switch shipments. 13 392 units were sold this week, so only a 11% drop compared to Week 39. With 734 133 units launched since launch, it’s only a matter of weeks until the 750 000 units milestone is reached. In fact, it should happen next week, unless Nintendo Switch shipments drop again.

As for Pokkén Tournament DX, it was hit harder by the drop in Nintendo Switch sales, with “only” 11 831 units sold this week (-50%). Still, the game is still holding in the Top 10 easily, and should keep selling steadily until the end of the year. 88 768 units have been sold so far, and Pokkén Tournament should top 100 000 units sold within the next couple of weeks.

Finally, Fire Emblem Warriors dropped sharply this week, with -81% at once for the Nintendo Switch version, and -73% for the Nintendo 3DS version. They sold 8 024 units and 4 952 units respectively. That’s a pretty poor performance so far, which doesn’t bode well for retailers looking to get rid of the excess stock from the Day 1 shipment.  At this rate, they’re going to have to resort to (massive) price cuts…

Next, here’s how the games in the second half of the Top 20 have been faring:

• 11./11. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 6.196 / 604.865 (-19%). The Nintendo Switch version has now sold over 600 000 units, which is a fantastic result;
• 14./14. [NSW] Monster Hunter Double Cross: Nintendo Switch Ver.  (Capcom) – 4.785 / 151.668 (-25%). Sales remain steady, albeit a bit slow (not surprising since we’re in a slow period for video game sales);
• 15./08. [NSW] FIFA 18 (Electronic Arts) – 4.660 / 17.276 (-63%). The drop was softer than for the PlayStation 4, but sales are nowhere near the same level;
• 16./16. [3DS] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age <RPG> (Square Enix) – 4.370 / 1.737.922 (-23%). As the only remaining version in the Top 20, it’s selling fairly well during this slow period;
• 17./19. [NSW] Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch (Bandai Namco Games) – 4.339 / 40.424 (-2%). It looks like the new shipments combined with interest in the Dragon Ball Super anime series are helping sales;
• 18./17. [3DS] The Snack World: TreJarers (Level 5) – 4.126 / 176.959 (-19%). Sales remain steady, and it’s going to be interesting to see how this one sells during the upcoming holiday period;
• 19./22. [NSW] Arms (Nintendo) – 3.340 / 232.688. Thanks to its steady sales, and the drop for all other games, ARMS finally makes its comeback in the Top 20. It looks like it will reach the 250 000 units milestone within the next couple of months!

This week, Nintendo slowed down with the Nintendo Switch shipments, leading to a noticeable drop in sales: they went from 73 231 units to 38 204 units. But while there was indeed a drop in sales, it’s nowhere near as bad as in May and June, when the Nintendo Switch was flirting with the 20 000 units/week threshold.

Next week will show us if this week’s drop is due to Nintendo stockpiling for the launch of Super Mario Odyssey, or if it was just them leaving some breathing room to the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Famicom (which sold 368 000 units during the first four days, according to Famitsu). One thing’s for sure: demand still far outweighs supply, by a wide margin.

Week 40 also saw the release of two new colours for the New Nintendo 2DS XL, and as expected, the impact on sales was rather limited. With how saturated the platform is, it’s no real wonder, and it’s not Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions that was going to boost sales. One should not expect a significant increase in Nintendo 3DS sales until the release of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon in November.

Finally, the Wii U sold only 45 units this week.
