[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 4, 2018 (January 22nd – January 28th) [Top 50]

Last week was a pretty big week for the Japanese market, but for once, it wasn’t because of the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s last console did manage to grab 5 of the 10 spots of the Top 10 Software from Media Create, despite a complete lack of new releases.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle had a decent 2nd week, with 26 088 units sold. That’s 61% less than during launch week, which is a pretty good second week drop. It seems like word of mouth is working, though it’s a bit too early to say for sure… we will have to wait and see how the game fares in the upcoming weeks for that. Since launch, over 92 000 units have been sold, which means the game will top 100 000 units sold next week.

Meanwhile, Splatoon 2 sales are basically flat, with 25 776 units sold (-10%). New and existing Nintendo Switch owners are hungry for games, and Splatoon 2 is one of the games many of them end up with. So far, 1 971 810 units have been sold at retail, which means it should finally reach 2 million units next week.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe also held pretty well: it sold 21 834 during Week 4. That’s not as good as Splatoon 2 (sales dropped by 17%), but it’s clear Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is among the key titles for new Nintendo Switch owners. Since launch, over 1 286 634 units have been sold. The same can be said for Super Mario Odyssey, which just keeps on selling: 16 664 additional units this week (-12%), and 1 571 976 units since launch.

As for Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, it’s not done selling, as we can see with the 12 702 additional units sold this week. It’s not holding as well as the Nintendo Switch games we just talked about (-24% compared to last week), but it’s still selling at a good pace. Over 1 528 001 units of the stand-alone versions have been sold since launch, at retail.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the few games that saw an increase in sales this week (+8%), with 10 240 units sold. This is most likely due to additional shipments following the shortages during Week 2 and 3. Since launch, over 834 968 units have been sold, and it should be able to reach the 850 000 units threshold within the next couple of weeks.

Yo-kai Watch Busters 2 is selling surprisingly well, despite the end of the holiday season several weeks ago. It’s now sold nearly 500 000 units (490 853 to be precise), thanks to the 7 755 additional units (-16%) sold during Week 4. It will be interesting to see how this one fares during the upcoming weeks and months, and whether sales remain as steady as they have so far.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 are faring:

• 11./09. [3DS] Mario Party: The Top 100 (Nintendo) – 6.535 / 142.308 (-43%). Sales have taken a hit this week, but it only lost 2 places this week. It should reach 150 000 units sold within the next couple of weeks;
• 13./17. [NSW] Pokken Tournament DX (Pokémon Co.) – 4.765 / 214.730 (+11%). Thanks to new shipments, sales are on the rise again;
• 14./15. [NSW] Arms (Nintendo) – 4.399 / 356.031 (-11%). Sales remain steady, which is a pretty positive sign;
• 15./16. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 4.375 / 386.695 (-1%). It looks like the Japanese audience hasn’t had its fill of silly party fun yet!
• 18./40. [NSW] FIFA 18 (Electronic Arts) – 3.720 / 78.169. Just like Pokkén Tournament DX, additional shipments is the reason sales increased this week (it’s been virtually sold out for the past couple of weeks);
• 20./21. [NSW] Monster Hunter Double Cross: Nintendo Switch Ver. (Capcom) – 3.162 / 207.939. It’s unlikely the 3 162 people who bought the game thought they were buying Monster Hunter World instead…

Hardware-wise, things are a bit uneventful for Nintendo platforms. The Nintendo Switch saw a slight increase in sales/shipments, with over 47 000 units this week. It looks like we can safely expect sales to steadily improve moving forward, especially with Nintendo raising their forecast one more for the current Fiscal Year. So far, 273 640 units have been sold this year, and 3 586 259 units since launch.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales dropped evern further this week, with only 11 313 units sold. Not surprising given the complete lack of new releases, and the fact the handheld is soon approaching its 7th Anniversary. So far, sales in 2018 are roughly 50% down Year on Year. In a couple of months, the Nintendo 3DS will reach the 24 million threshold.
