[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 37, 2017 (September 11th – September 17th) [Top 50]

This week has several entries in the Top 20 from Media Create, and two of them are on a Nintendo platform. Metroid: Samus Returns opened at #3 with about 30 000 units, which is a pretty decent performance for the series in Japan, especially for a late release like this one (and from a series that has been neglected in the past decade). It’s nothing to write home about, but at the very least, it’s not a complete flop.

Here’s how the previous games in the series fared in Japan (NB: Famitsu data, courtesy of GamesDataLibrary):

Unfortunately, it’s unlikely Metroid: Samus Returns will reach 100 000 units, as sales of single player games tend to be frontloaded (in part thanks to the strong used sales market in Japan). The second week drop will tell us if 100 000 units LTD is indeed possible, or a mere pipe dream. Maybe positive word of mouth will carry sales further than we’re expecting!

The second entry of the week on Nintendo platforms is Champion Jockey Special, which sold 2 626 units. That’s a pretty uneventful release, so there’s not much to say about it… other than Koei-Tecmo shipping a surprisingly large number of units to retailers (20-40% sell-through ratio).

Winning Post 8 2017 sold even more poorly: it didn’t even chart in the Media Create Top 20. Famitsu reports 1 774 units sold for it (20-40% sell-through ratio).

Next, we have Splatoon 2 at #2, with 37 481 units sold this week. That’s a slight drop (-17%), which may seem surprising given Nintendo Switch sales are flat this week. But there’s a reason for that: Nintendo has already stopped the production of the Splatoon 2 bundle, and has started shipping more of the regular Nintendo Switch packs (compared to the previous packs).

The majority of Nintendo Switch sold are still from the Splatoon 2 bundle, but its share has been dropping, so this is having an impact on Splatoon 2 sales. Of course, that does not mean interest for the game is dropping, quite the opposite.

Meanwhile, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is enjoying a slight increase in sales this week, thanks to the stable Nintendo Switch shipments. As we’ve pointed out several times already, it has truly become one of the must-haves on Nintendo Switch, and sales are going to remain steady for a while (before the massive increase expected during the end of year holiday period).

As for Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, it’s still selling pretty well, but the weekly drop is still there. 10 525 additional units were sold this week (-34%), which brings the total since launch to 1 720 431 units. It’s unlikely sales are going to go up without public holidays to boost them.

Finally, we have Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver. at #10, with 9 414 units sold (-27%). While sales are decent, the game doesn’t seem poised to sell in the long run. 133 621 units have been sold so far, and unless the end of year holidays have no particular impact on sales, it should be able to reach 200 000 units LTD.

Next, here’s how the games in the second half of the Top 20 are faring:

• 12./09. [3DS] The Snack World: TreJarers (Level 5) – 6.658 / 161.807 (-6%). Sales are surprisingly steady, which bodes well for the long term potential of this game. Over 160 000 units have been sold since launch;
• 14./13. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 5.000 / 585.553 (+11%). Sales are pretty strong, which is good news as the holiday period is still a few months away. It looks like they will top 600 000 units sometime in October;
• 15./17. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 3.840 / 239.954 (+4%). Yes, this game is still selling… and the holiday period hasn’t even started!
• 16./03. [NSW] Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch (Bandai Namco Games) – 3.782 / 27.827 (-84%). As expected, sales dropped sharply this week, due to shortages;
• 17./16. [NSW] Arms (Nintendo) – 3.589 / 221.700 (-3%). Sales are pretty stable, which is good news. It will be interesting to see how big they will become by the time the holiday period kicks in, in December;
• 19./12. [3DS] Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 (Atlus) – 3.057 / 38.653 (-46%). Last week in the Top 20 for this game!

Media Create – Hardware

This week was once again pretty uneventful Hardware-wise. Nintendo Switch sales are stable, thanks to Nintendo increasing the production of its popular console. 44 052 units were sold this week, which is more or less the same as during Week 45. Unfortunately, it’s still nowhere near enough to meet demand, as usual…

The next few weeks have important releases (Pokkén Tournament DX this Friday, and Fire Emblem Warriors next week), and so Nintendo is expected to ship more units this and next week. That being said, it’s pretty clear the next major increase for Nintendo Switch shipments is Super Mario Odyssey on October 27th, and until then, we can expect sales to stay in the 40 000 units range.

It’s possible sales/shipment will drop in October, but in the past few weeks, shipments have stayed at a “high” level (for the Nintendo Switch, that is), even during weeks without any releases at all. Therefore, even if there’s going to be a drop in October, it shouldn’t be nearly as bad as the one in May and June.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales are stable week on week, but down by almost 17 000 units compared to the same week last year. The reason for that is called the Nintendo 2DS, which was launched in September 15th 2016 in Japan. But even with that drop, yearly sales are up compared to 2016, and it’s going to stay that way for a few more weeks. Now, to see if they will stay that way until the end of the year…

Finally, the Wii U sold 86 units this week.
