[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 36, 2017 (September 4th – September 10th) [Top 50]

There’s a few entries in the Media Create Top 20 this week, but only one is on a Nintendo platform: Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, which opened at 24 045 units sold. This is a decent debut, especially as the game quickly sold out (within the first two days), with Bandai-Namco promising additional shipments at the end of the month. It will be interesting to see if this late port ends up selling on the long run or not.

Splatoon 2 keeps selling at a steady pace, helped by steady Nintendo Switch sales (again, thanks to the bundle). This week, Media Create reports 44 981 additional Inklings in the seas of Japan, bringing the total since launch to over 1.1 million (1 101 481 to be precise). It really doesn’t look like Splatoon 2 is going to stop selling any time soon… far from it!

As for Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age on Nintendo 3DS, sales are once again down this week (-30%), but they remain strong enough with 15 993 units sold. This version of the game has now sold over 1.7 million units (1 709 906 units to be precise), bringing it ever closer to the 2 million milestone (which is going to have to wait a few months, at least).

Sales also dropped for Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver., with 12 811 units sold (-53%) this week, and 124 207 units since launch. There’s unfortunately nothing much to say about this game for now, as it remains to be seen if it’s going to sell on the long run or not.

Meanwhile, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is also selling at a steady pace, just like Splatoon 2. With 10 526 units sold this week, sales dropped a little bit (-16%), but they remain strong. It’s pretty clear at this point Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is considered one of the “must-haves” by new Nintendo Switch owners, and it’s bound to keep selling throughout the rest of the year. 638 214 units have been sold since launch.

Finally, The Snack World: Trejarers sold 7 079 units this week (-30%)… again with the “not bad but not really fantastic either” sales. We’re probably going to have until the end of the year to see the long-term potential of this new cross-media franchise. 155 149 units have been sold since launch, which is still better than Yo-kai Watch back in 2013 (but with the anime already airing).

Next, here’s how the games in the second half of the Top 20 are faring:

• 12./03. [3DS] Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 (Atlus) – 5.709 / 35.596 (-81%). After the disappointing debut comes the usual second week drop most “hardcore” RPG get… and it’s not pretty;
• 13./15. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild <ADV> (Nintendo) – 4.485 / 580.552 (-9%). As Nintendo Switch sales remain strong, sales of various key titles on the console remain steady, and this is one of them. It looks like it’s going to reach 600 000 units sold sometime in October;
• 16./13. [NSW] Arms (Nintendo) – 3.711 / 218.111 (-28%). Unfortunately, sales for this game are not quite as steady as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but it’s still hanging around in the Top 20, so that’s definitely a positive sign. Even if it was to drop from the Top 20, it’s likely to keep selling a steady amount, and pop back up during holiday weeks;
• 17./17. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 3.704 / 236.114 (-8%). Such steady sales for such an old game is quite the remarkable feat!

Media Create – Hardware

This week was pretty uneventful week for Hardware, due to a lack of notable releases.

It looks like the situation has really improved for the Nintendo Switch, thanks to the increases in production. This week, the console sold 45 439 units, despite no major release to warrant increased shipments: it looks like the weeks with 20-30 000 units sold are truly behind us, which bodes well for the upcoming slow periods (most of October and November).

The Nintendo 3DS saw another drop in sales, with “only” 21 134 units sold. As you can see in the Top 20 above, there wasn’t a single release to boost sales this week, so it’s no wonder sales dropped. Next week (Week 38) has Pokémon Gold and Silver on Virtual Console, and Monday (September 18th) is a public holiday, so it’s safe to assume sales are not going to drop much lower than they already have.

Finally, the Wii U sold only 90 units this week, finally dropping to 2 digits sales.
