[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 35, 2017 (August 28th – September 3rd) [Top 50]

This week, there’s quite a lot of entries in the Top 20 from Media Create, and a few of them are on Nintendo platforms. The best-selling of the bunch is Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2, which really underperformed compared to its predecessor. It sold only 29 887 units, which is a poor debut: the first Etrian Mystery Dungeon sold 65 226 units during its first week.

It looks like players were not really interested in a “more of the same” game, especially so late in the lifecycle of the Nintendo 3DS… and after so many other Etrian Odyssey games in the past few years.

While it’s highly unlikely Atlus had lofty expectations, or even expected this game to sell as much as the first one (sequels on the same platform rarely do better, unless it considerably shakes up the formula), it’s doubtful they expected the drop to be that bad.

The second entry of the week on Nintendo platform is another Nintendo 3DS game… Jake Hunter Detective Story: Ghost of the Dusk! It sold 6 132 units during the first few days, which is in line with the previous entry (about 5 000 units according to Famitsu data).

Considering the previous entry was poorly received, and ended selling barely 10 000 units LTD (according to the latest known data from Famitsu), it definitely isn’t a great sign that Jake Hunter Detective Story: Ghost of the Dusk barely did better. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely sales will be better in the long-run, though at the very least, 10 000 units should be reached pretty easily.

Finally, we have the Nintendo Switch version of Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon, which sold pretty poorly with only 4 463 units during the first few days. Though in that case, the problem isn’t really the platform, but the game itself: it sold poorly on all platforms, not just the Nintendo Switch.

In comparison, the first entry sold over 77 000 units over three platforms (35 000 units on PlayStation 4, 32 904 units on PlayStation Vita, and 10 416 units on PlayStation 3). As you can see for yourself below, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions of Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon sold nowhere near what the original did.

Unfortunately for Koei-Tecmo and Gust, adding a new platform to the mix didn’t really change much… even if said platform is so popular it’s been suffering from shortages since launch. It looks like the audience for such a JRPG isn’t quite there on Nintendo Switch, though Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon isn’t really the best game to gauge demand for that genre since it underperformed on all platforms.

But one thing’s for sure: Nintendo Switch players are quite busy with Splatoon 2! This week, it sold an additional 52 320 units thanks to stronger Nintendo Switch shipments than expected: sales did drop, but only by 4%. Over 1 056 500 units have been sold so far, and as explained before, weekly sales are directly tied to the amount of consoles shipped (due to the bundles). And it’s unlikely to change any time soon.

As for Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, it sold a pretty good amount this week: 22 846 units, only -24% compared to last week. While it’s definitely going to take a few months, 2 million looks like a lock for the Nintendo 3DS version of the game.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is also selling pretty well, thanks to the “good” Nintendo Switch shipments. 12 474 units were sold this week (672 688 units since launch), a 4% drop compared to last week. It’s clear by now that this game is bound to sell as well as the original on the long run (in fact, it’s soon going to overcome it in weekly sales launch aligned), which shows just how much healthier the Nintendo Switch is as a platform.

Finally, we have The Snack World: TreJarers at #9 with 10 098 units sold (-32%). So far, sales have been good, but nothing to write home about (yet?). As mentioned before, it’s clear that this is no Yo-kai Watch, but it remains to be seen how far The Snack World IP as a whole (not just the game) can go.

Next, let’s take a look at games in the other half of the Top 20:

• 13./10. [NSW] Arms (Nintendo) – 5.183 / 214.400 (-6%). Sales remain pretty steady, thanks to the increased Nintendo Switch shipments. So far, so good!
• 15./11. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 4.904 / 576.067 (-4%). Sales are also steady for Zelda, which is a good sign. It looks like sales will top 600 000 units sometime in October;
• 17./14. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 4.008 / 232.410 (-5%). Summer holidays may be over, this one is still hanging around in the Top 20.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales did not drop as much as we were expecting, and it ended up selling 50 074 units. That’s a pretty good result, though it’s clearly not enough to meet demand… at the very least, it shows Nintendo has been able to up production significantly, or they wouldn’t be shipping 50 000 units during a slow week in September.

So far, 1 578 036 units have been sold so far, but without constant shortages, total sales would have already topped 2 million units and well on their way to 3 million units.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales went slightly up this week, with 26 268 units sold. Those sales are nothing to write home about, but they’re not really bad either. They’re pretty ok sales for an “old” platform that’s already reached saturation. We can expect that level of sales throughout September and October, with spikes here and there.

Finally, the Wii U sold almost the same amount as last week: 116 units (as opposed to 117 units last week). Of course, Media Create (and Famitsu, Dengeki) only provides accurate estimates, not 100% accurate sales data (which are impossible to get), so the Wii U didn’t truly sell exactly one unit less this week.
