[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 34, 2017 (August 21st – August 27th) [Top 50]

This week, there’s several entries in the Top 20 from Media Create, including a few on Nintendo platforms. The best-seller  is Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver., which sold 84 277 units. That’s a rather meek debut, but given the Nintendo 3DS version launched in March, it’s no wonder sales are not too hot. Not to mention the Nintendo Switch is still quite expensive… and hard to find in stores!

Right now, it’s not clear whether Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch will sell on the long run or not. It’s on a popular platform, and it’s the most recent Monster Hunter game on a portable device (the only one until Capcom ever announces a new entry on Nintendo Switch), so it should sell pretty decently. It’s definitely going to be overshadowed by a certain “worldwide” game, though.

Quite surprisingly, only the Nintendo Switch version of One Piece: Unlimited World Red – Deluxe Edition managed to get a spot in the Top 20 from Media Create, with 4 652 units sold. Those are pretty low sales, but that’s to be expected with a late port of a late port of a game originally released on Nintendo 3DS.

Thanks to “massive” Nintendo Switch shipments this week, sales for Splatoon 2 jumped by 60%. As explained before, the majority of Nintendo Switch consoles sold are Splatoon 2 bundles, so it’s no surprise Software sales generally mirror Hardware ones. Significant milestone for the game: it’s now sold over 1 million units sold since launch, in basically a month… that’s much faster than for the original (it wasn’t until December)!

Meanwhile, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is once again down this week… not surprising now that the Summer holidays are over. Still, sales remain strong with over 30 000 units sold (and 1 671 067 units since launch). Combined, both versions of the game have sold 2 985 469 units… 3 million units at retail will be reached next week!

As for The Snack World: Trejarers, it sold 14 764 units this week (-42%). Sales are staying at “ok but not really impressive” level, and the long-term potential of the game is yet to be seen… it’s a tad too early for that, though. 137 972 units have been sold so far, which means The Snack World: Trejarers should top 150 000 units sold within the next couple of weeks.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe did benefit from the increased Nintendo Switch shipments: its sales increased very slightly (+1%) to 13 731 units. So far, more than 660 000 units have been sold at retail, which is a really great result for an expanded port.

As for ARMS, the increased in Nintendo Switch shipments didn’t lead to any increase in sales, but there’s no doubt the drop would have been harder if not for them. Still, sales remain quite steady, with 5 495 units sold (-15%) this week, and 209 217 units since launch. The next few months will give us a better idea of the long-term potential of this game.

Finally, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild also enjoyed steady sales, with 5 131 units sold (-3%). It’s steadily moving towards 600 000 units on Nintendo Switch alone, which is a great result for a modern The Legend of Zelda game (especially a 3D one, on console).

Next, here’s how the games in the second half of the Top 20 are faring:

• 14./09. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 4.235 / 228.402 (-27%). Summer holidays may be over, this game doesn’t want to leave the Top 20 right away, and is planning to stay a couple more weeks;
• 16./16. [3DS] Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Kakugo (Capcom) – 3.984 / 89.431 (-17%). This one is struggling to even reach 100 000 units, and it’s obviously not going to do so before October at this rate;
• 19./12. [3DS] Pokémon Sun / Moon (Pokémon Co.)  – 3.233 / 3.317.852 (-36%). The Summer holidays effect is over, which is why this one almost dropped from the Top 20 this week;
• 20./08. [3DS] Hey! Pikmin (Nintendo) – 3.226 / 123.937 (-46%). Same comments as for Pokémon. This one should at least be able to reach 150 000 units LTD in the next few months.

After a massive drop last week, the Nintendo Switch bounced back up during Week 34 with no less than 69 654 units sold (that’s more than 3 times what it sold during Week 33). It looks like Nintendo wanted there to be a lot of consoles available for the launch of Monster Hunter XX Nintendo Switch Ver., which is a pretty sensible decision.

Unfortunately, it’s quite likely sales / shipments will drop sharply next week, now that the Summer holidays are over. What’s more, there isn’t any really major releases until October (though there are new games releasing pretty much every week until then). The next big week for Nintendo Switch is most likely going to be the one with Pokkén Tournament DX and Dragon Quest X (on September 22nd and September 21st, respectively).

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales once again dropped this week, to 25 210 units sold. At the very least, sales are still better than they were last year during the same week (which was particularly bad for Hardware), though not by much anymore. If not for the New Nintendo 2DS XL, the Nintendo 3DS would be down by a large margin.

Nintendo 3DS sales are bound to stay at low levels in the upcoming weeks, at least until November. How long it will manage to stay ahead of 2016 sales remains to be seen, but so far so good!

Finally, the Wii U sold 117 units.
