[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 28, 2017 (July 10th – July 16th) [Top 50]

Media Create

This is it: one of the slowest periods of the year for video games sales in Japan is finally over, and the market is finally entering a much more interesting period… Summer! This week was particularly important, with the release of several key titles, and obviously the New Nintendo 2DS XL. There’s several entries in the Media Create Top 20, and 3 of them are on Nintendo platforms.

The first one is Hey! Pikmin, which is off to a pretty decent start with 65 867 units sold. Of course, this is not comparable to previous mainline Pikmin games (they all opened with more than 100 000 units, including Pikmin 3 on Wii U, but exclusive the Wii re-releases).

Of course, this is just the beginning, and the real test is yet to come. Will good word of mouth allow it to keep selling on the long run? It’s quite likely, what with the Summer holidays starting this week-end. There’s no doubt it will manage to sell at least 100 000 units (maybe even before the end of the month, if sales don’t drop too fast… or rather, the holiday boost isn’t too slow to kick in). 250 000 LTD should be a respectable result for this game.

Unfortunately, Ever Oasis had a downright terrible debut with only 14 325 units. Launching alongside the New Nintendo 2DS XL didn’t really help it one bit, and with Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete coming pretty soon, it’s possible Ever Oasis will fall into oblivion pretty quickly… Hopefully, the Summer holidays and good word of mouth will help it stay afloat, so that it can sell on the long run.

Finally, the last entry on Nintendo platforms this week is 100% Pascal Sensei: Kanpeki Paint Bombers, which sold only 9 113 units. Nothing to write home about for this licenced game, which could sell decently during the Summer holidays… provided kids are not too busy with other, more popular games!

As for the various Nintendo Switch games in the Top 20, it’s the calm before the storm. Hardware sales did increase this week, but this didn’t reflect in Software sales. For example, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is slightly down with 11 554 units sold (-14%, 575 048 units since launch), though sales remain pretty good.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is also slightly down, with 7 015 units sold this week (-10%, and 537 027 units since launch). Combined, both versions of the game have sold at least 670 051 units (537 027 + 133 024) since launch. In order for them to reach 1 million units before the end of the year, they need to sell the remaining 329 949 units during the next 24 weeks, so at least 13 747 units/week.

There is one oddity in the Top 20 from Media Create: Super Bomberman R, which makes its comeback at #9. This is due to special Nintendo Switch bundles sold on Amazon.co.jp, which ended boosting sales in quite the spectacular fashion. With 5 200 units sold this week, Super Bomberman R is getting pretty close to the 100 000 units threshold, that it should be able to reach within the next couple of weeks (it’s currently at 97 123 units).

Finally, the release of the New Nintendo 2DS XL had an extremely positive impact on sales for Pokémon Sun and Moon: +45% at once, and without a public holiday to boot. Since Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are still a way off (with pre-orders not even open yet), sales should remain steady throughout the Summer holidays.

Here’s how games in the second half of the Media Create Top 20 are faring:

  • 12./08. [3DS] Monster Hunter Double Cross (Capcom) – 4.045 / 1.543.038 (-7%). Sales remain steady, helped by the release of the New Nintendo 2DS XL;
  • 14./16. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 3.201 / 201.897 (+14%). Just like Pokémon Sun and Moon, it got a pretty healthy boost thanks to the release of the New Nintendo 2DS XL;
  • 17./17. [3DS] Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission X (Bandai Namco Games) – 2.458 / 177.949 (-5%). Sales remain steady, as the Summer holidays are drawing near;
  • 18./07. [3DS] Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology (Atlus) – 2.433 / 32.377 (-55%). Unsurprisingly, it follows the usual sales trajectory for JRPG, and right now, even 50 000 units LTD looks hard to reach…
  • 20./19. [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo) – 2.392 / 1.062.057 (-1%). It looks like the release of the New Nintendo 2DS XL prevented this one from being ousted from the Top 20!

Nintendo 3DS sales are up this week, and it’s no wonder… the New Nintendo 2DS XL was released! This new model sold no less than 43 315 units during its launch week, which is quite the respectable debut for a revision so late in the lifecycle of a console.

As comparison, the Nintendo 2DS sold only 18 754 units during its launch week, though that was in mid-September (definitely not as good a period for video games sales), and without any major titles launching alongside it (just some Nintendo Selects, that didn’t even chart in the Top 20 that week). Not to mention Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete, which is just around the corner…

Thanks to the New Nintendo 2DS XL (which is going to be the main model going forward), the Nintendo 3DS has caught up with 2016 as far as YTD sales go: 759 661 units for 2017, and 740 230 for 2016 (but that’s without taking into account the 100 000 units from the Pokémon Nintendo 2DS bundles, not tracked).

With Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete releasing on July 29th, and the Summer holidays starting this week-end, Nintendo 3DS sales are bound to remain strong and steady at least until the end of August.

It will be the only opportunity for it to get as big a lead as possible for YTD sales, because September to November is not only a slower period for video games sales, but this year, there will be no brand new mainline Pokémon game in November (there is Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, but it’s bound to sell significantly less than Pokémon Sun and Moon… just like Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 sold less than the original versions).

As for the Nintendo Switch, there is surprisingly little to say about it this week. Shortages continue unabated, which is definitely worrisome as Splatoon 2 is drawing nearer and nearer. Nintendo did manage to ship a few more units this week (+ 5 000 units), but clearly not enough to meet demand yet.

It’s hard to say exactly how many Nintendo Switch Nintendo will ship for Splatoon 2 launch, but we can definitely expect a major increase. Anything less than 100 000 units would be nothing short of suicidal, but Nintendo also has to think of the following weeks.

After all, with the Summer holidays starting basically on the same day as Splatoon 2 launch, the company needs to be able to ship enough copies throughout this important period. Unfortunately, you’re going to read the word “shortages” pretty often in the upcoming weeks and months!

Finally, the Wii U sold 146 units this week.
