[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 26, 2017 (June 26 – July 2nd) [Top 50]

NB: due to an extremely busy schedule this week, we”re only providing commentary for new releases in the Media Create Top 20 + Hardware this week.

Media Create

This week, there’s quite a few new releases in the Top 20 Software from Media Create, but there’s only two on Nintendo platforms.

The first one is Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology, which manages to top sales with only 24 596 units sold… that goes to show how slow sales have been for the market as a whole. This is a pretty decent debut for this remake on the Nintendo DS cult-classic, since the original debuted at 34 000 units (according to Famitsu, so different tracker).

However, it’s unlikely it will come anywhere close the total sales of the original, which ended up selling 75 411 units LTD. Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology should be able to crawl to 50 000 units sold, but beyond that will be a nice bonus for Atlus… unless sales remain surprisingly steady during the next few weeks.

The second new release is LEGO City Undercover, which sold 5 351 during its opening week. In comparison, the original version on Wii U sold about 18 000 units at launch (according to Famitsu), so this is a decent debut for a straight port sold at full price. Besides, this is pretty much in line with what other LEGO games usually sell in Japan. Strangely enough, the PlayStation 4 version is nowhere to be seen in the Top 20…

A quick note about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The Nintendo Switch version sold 9 144 units this week (+10%), bringing the total to 522 182 units sold since launch. Once again, the Wii U version did not chart.

Combined, both versions of the game have sold at least 655 206 units (522 182 + 133 024) since launch. In order for them to reach 1 million units before the end of the year, they need to sell the remaining 344 794 units during the next 26 weeks, so at least 13 261 units/week.

Media Create – Hardware

Nintendo Switch increased slightly this week, thanks to Nintendo shipping a bit more units, but once again, shortages are still on-going. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely they will end anytime soon, not with Splatoon 2 just around the corner. Speaking of Splatoon 2, it will be interesting to see if Nintendo also increases shipments next week, or chooses to keep as many units as possible for launch week (the following week, Week 28).

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales were flat this week, with 15 720 units (roughly +1 000 units compared to last week). Unfortunately, sales are once again down Year on Year, which applies both to weekly sales and the total for the current year.

It’s possible players are holding on buying a Nintendo 3DS in anticipation of the New Nintendo 2DS XL on July 13th, but it’s hard to say for sure. It could simply be saturation combined with a lack of meaningful Software releases.

Finally, the Wii U sold 193 units this week, an increase of 43 units compared to last week!
