[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 20, 2016 (May 16th – 22nd) [Top 50]

If you’ve read our previous Media Create reports, you already know that we’re currently in the middle of one of the worst periods of the year for the video game market in Japan. Week 20 is proof of that, with terrible sales for both Software and Hardware, despite 6 new entries this week (only one on Nintendo 3DS).

The only entry for the Nintendo 3DS is Boku no Hero Academia, which had a pretty mediocre debut with only 5 607 units sold.

According to Famitsu, only 20-40% of all units shipped to retailers were effectively sold, and there’s little reason to doubt they’re not really happy about such a performance. Unless the game has extremely good word of mouth (which doesn’t seem to be the case), slashing prices will be the only way to sell all remaining units…

Even the best-sellers on Nintendo 3DS were hit by the drop in sales for Week 20. For example, Kirby: Planet Robobot sold 19 383 units, which is a drop of -20%. That being said, it’s still holding well, and has now sold over 250 000 units (it’s currently sitting at 268 334 units sold). As for Yo-kai Sangokushi, its drop is slightly better (-17%), but it also sold less (8 913 units).

Quite surprisingly, the Splatoon x Super Mario Maker duo is holding pretty well, especially Super Mario Maker which even saw its sales increase during Week 20. It sold 4 088 additional units: an increase of 1% due to new shipments of Wii U Premium Packs (stocks are still pretty low). It’s nothing to write about home about, but still a pretty amusing fact! As for Splatoon, it sold 5 038 units during Week 20 (-4%). It should reach 1.5 million units sometime this Summer.

Below, we can find what we could call the remnents of the Golden Week, with:

• Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 (#14): 4 047 units sold (-30%). It looks like it will not reach 600 000 units sold before next month;
• Animal Crossing: New Leaf (#18): 2 373 units sold (-5%). Due to pretty low Software sales for the market, it’s still in the Top 20!
• Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (#19): 2 319 units sold (-4%).

Finally, we have the Star Fox Zero + Star Fox Guard bundle, which sold 3.735 units during Week 20. That’s an increase of 69% compared to Week 19, but unfortunately, it’s not cause for celebration… quite the opposite. Indeed, it’s the sign retailers have started to slash the price in order to get rid of the remaining units. There’s absolutely no reason for a game which underperformed at launch to suddenly start getting “good” sales out of the blue, several weeks after.

Hardware

Hardware-wise, there’s really nothing to note this week. Sales are slightly down for the Nintendo 3DS, which sold 15 406 units during Week 20. That’s very slightly better than last year during the same week (15 257 units), which is a positive sign. Once the June releases (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice + new New Nintendo 3DS XL colours, latest Taiko Drum Master game, etc.) start rolling, sales should improve noticeably (and on the long run).

As for the Wii U, sales are still pretty slow with 4 109 units sold. That’s a tad better than during Week 19, but significantly worse than last year during the same week (when sales already were not too hot to begin with). Unfortunately, comparisons with 2015 are only going to get worse from next week onward, as Splatoon came out on May 28th last year.

The Wii U does not have a game of that caliber this year, to boost sales not just during launch week, but also during the following weeks/months (especially during the Summer holiday). There is Minecraft: Wii U Edition on June 23rd, but its impact on sales remain unknown (the fact that Nintendo doesn’t seem interested in shipping more units to retailers doesn’t really help).
