[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 2, 2018 (January 8th – January 14th) [Top 50]

Media Create

Now that the holiday season is truly over, Software sales are taking a hit, and it clearly shows in the Top 20 from Media Create. For starters, there isn’t any new releases on Nintendo platforms, as the one, lone entry this week is for the PlayStation 4. Also, pretty much all the games in the Top 20 saw a sharp drop in sales, though this seems to have benefitted the Nintendo Switch (which is surprising, given the drop in Hardware sales).

For example, Splatoon 2 sales dropped by 71%, with “only” 34 632 units sold this week. This brings the total to 1 917 342 units sold since launch, which means we’re probably going to have to wait a little bit longer before the game reaches the 2 million units milestones (it should still be sometime in January, though).

Super Mario Odyssey saw a similar drop in sales (-75%), but still sold a decent amount with 28 193 units this week (1 536 340 since launch). Same for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, that sold an additional 22 836 units this week (-72%), and 1 235 435 units since launch.

As for Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, it’s holding pretty well despite the end of the holiday season, with 21 494 units sold (-69%). It only lost 1 place this week, thanks to other games in the Top 20 suffering from a worse drop in sales. Since launch, almost 1.5 million units have been sold at retail (not counting the dual-pack, which has dropped from the Top 20 from Media Create).

Mario Party: The Top 100 is also holding pretty well, with 20 320 units sold this week (-61%). If sales remain steady, it could very well sell over 200 000 units when all is said and done, but it’s a bit too early to say for sure. As of Week 2, 124 319 units have been sold, so it’s not an impossible sales target at the very least!

Meanwhile, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is still trucking along, with 12 415 units sold this week (-31%). With 815 227 units sold as of Week 2, it’s now clearer than ever that the latest entry in the Legend of Zelda series is going to sell over 1 million units on Nintendo Switch alone. If you add Wii U and digital sales, it’s most likely reached that milestone already.

Yo-kai Watch Busters 2 is one of the games that saw the worst drop in sales this week, with -77% (only Kirby: Battle Royale had a worse one). It’s still managed to sell 7 851 units, bringing the total a little closer to the 500 000 units milestone. Unfortunately, it’s nothing to write home about, as the original sold much more than that during a similar timeframe (as a matter of fact, it’s yet to reach its Week 1 sales – over 688 888 units -).

Finally, ARMS managed to stay in the Top 10 one more week, though it’s highly likely it’s going to be the last. With 7 352 units sold this week, it saw a similar drop in sales than the other Nintendo Switch games in the Top 20 from Media Create (-71%). It’s now pretty close to the 350 000 units milestone, that it should reach next week.

Next, let’s take a look at how the games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

  • 12./09. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 6.886 / 377.919 (-67%). It will reach 400 000 units within the next few weeks;
  • 13./13. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 4.806 / 362.509 (-64%). Even now that the holiday season is over, this one isn’t ready to leave the Top 20;
  • 14./15. [NSW] Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Nintendo) – 4.476 / 172.676 (-61%). Slowly moving towards the 200 000 units milestone…
  • 15./31. [NSW] Super Bomberman R (Konami) – 4.134 / 145.029. This one hasn’t made many appearances in the Top 20, but it’s still been selling pretty steadily. It’s now about to reach the 150 000 units milestone;
  • 16./18. [NSW] Snipperclips Plus: Cut it Out, Together! (Nintendo) – 3.215 / 47.124 (-65%). This one should sell pretty steadily throughout 2018, but it will most likely not make many appearances in the Top 20;
  • 17./11. [3DS] Kirby Battle Royale (Nintendo) – 2.959 / 142.524 (-80%). The one game that saw the worst drop in sales this week (among the games that made it into the Top 20, of course);
  • 20./23. [NSW] Monster Hunter Double Cross: Nintendo Switch Ver. (Capcom) – 2.810 / 201.839. It finally makes its comeback on the Top 20, just in time to reach the 200 000 units milestone!

This week, the Nintendo Switch saw a massive drop in sales, with only 37 500 units sold this week. It’s clear Nintendo shipped everything they could for the holiday season, which is why sales dropped hard during Week 2. Fortunately, the situation should start improving starting next week, though it’s still going to be a while before demand is going to be met in full.

Sales also dropped sharply for the Nintendo 3DS, though in that case, it’s definitely not due to any shortages. The handheld sold 16 855 units, which is less than half of what it sold during the same week last year. That’s still a pretty respectable performance!

And as expected, Media Create stopped tracking the Wii U in Week 1, so we don’t know how many units it sold.
