[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 16, 2017 (April 17 – April 23) [Top 50]

Media Create

After several rather calm weeks, Week 16 saw the entry of several titles in the Top 20, including several on Nintendo platforms. The first one is Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, which had a pretty decent debut with 131 668 units.

This is way below Fire Emblem Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates (over 250 000 and 350 000 units at launch, respectively), but it’s still a good performance for the remake of one of the most controversial entries in the series (and radically different from the other Fire Emblem games on Nintendo 3DS).

Here’s how the previous Fire Emblem remakes sold:

  • [NDS] Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragons (Nintendo) – 144,905
  • [NDS] Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem (Nintendo) – 136.367
  • [3DS] Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (Nintendo) – 131.668

As you can see, this remake of Fire Emblem Gaiden sold in line with the previous remakes on Nintendo DS. Now, it remains to be seen how this one will sell on the long run. Famitsu has the original version at 325 000 units LTD, but it’s unlikely Fire Emblem Echoes will sell that many units.

The second entry of the week is Pro Yakyuu Famista Climax (also on Nintendo 3DS), with 48 142 units sold. This is a pretty good debut: twice as good as Pro Yakyuu Famista Returns in August 2015. As a matter of fact, this new entry has already outsold Pro Yakyuu Famista 2011 (47 873 units LTD according to Famitsu).

Finally, the last entry of the week on Nintendo platforms is Minna de Wai Wai! Spelunker (on Nintendo Switch), with 7 447 units sold. Since the game it’s based on was a Free 2 Play title, there really isn’t anything to compare those sales with.

Due to the many new releases this week, Monster Hunter XX finally drops from the first place (after dominating the Top 20 5 weeks in a row). Sales are once again down (-38%), with 27 283 units sold this week: this brings the total to 1 393 376 units since launch (meaning sales will top 1.4 million next week). We can expect sales to go back up with the Golden Week, that starts on Saturday.

Next, let’s take a look at the sales of the Nintendo Switch launch titles in the Top 20:

  • 06./02. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 20.364 / 395.655 (-3%). Hardware sales slighly increased this week, and so  it’s not surprising that sales for that particular title would be stable too;

The Wii U version sold 4 143 units this week, with a slightly bigger drop (-13%). The Golden Week should bring one last boost in sales. Since launch, this version has sold 104 689 units. Combined, both versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have sold 500 344 units.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild <ADV> (Nintendo) {2017.03.03} (¥6.980) – 4.143 / 104.689 (-13%)

  • 07./04. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 9.790 / 186.158 (-3%). Same observations as for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild;

As for Mario Sports Superstars, sales are (unsprisingly) down this week, with 7 007 units sold (-35%). We can expect this one to sell well during the Golden Week, which should bring it closer to 100 000 units LTD (it’s currently sitting at 68 886 units).

Finally, here’s the other games on Nintendo platforms in the second half of the Top 20:

  •  14./09. [3DS] Pokémon Sun / Moon (Pokémon Co.) – 4.012 / 3.245.611 (-16%). An increase in sales is expected for the next couple of weeks (Golden Week);
  • 15./11. [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo) – 3.809 / 1.023.243 (-12%). Same as for Pokémon Sun and Moon;
  • 16./13. [NSW] Super Bomberman R (Konami) – 3.552 / 73.677 (+1%). Word of mouth seems to be doing wonders for this game, and no doubt last week’s update and DLC really helped. It will be interesting to see how this one sells on the long run, especially if Konami keeps improving the game and adding new content. There’s no doubt it will sell 100 000 units LTD now;
  • 17./19. [3DS] Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki <RPG> (Level 5) {2016.12.15} (¥4.800) – 3.163 / 707.846 (+13%). It looks like the recent release of Ver. 3.0 is doing wonders on sale, and those should remain stable during the next couple of weeks thanks to the Golden Week;
  • 20./17. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 2.830 / 165.015 (-7%). This one is going to stay in the Top 20 until the Golden Week is over.

This week, Nintendo once again managed to ship more Nintendo Switch units to retailers, which is why sales are slightly up. But shortages are still there, and raffles to win the right to buy one are still commonplace. In other words, demand keeps outpacing the offer, and what the Nintendo Switch sold this week corresponds to what Nintendo was able to ship.

With over 48 000 units sold this week, Nintendo Switch sales finally topped 700 000 units. Due to shortages, demand for the console remain strong, and there’s no doubt said demand will not wane any time soon. The next milestone is 1 million units, and it looks like it could be reached before Splatoon 2 is even released.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launches on Friday, and sales are expected to increase dramatically. But again, how many units Nintendo ends up selling will depend on how many units they are able to ship to retailers. We have good reason to believe there will be a major shipment alongside Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (the first major release since launch, after all), with subsequent shipments for the Golden Week.

Nintendo Switch sales are going to be pretty interesting in the upcoming, what with the Golden Week and the post-Golden Week period. The latter is pretty slow (one of the slowest periods of the year), and it will be interesting to see if Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is able to carry the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo 3DS sales are slightly down, with 22 629 units sold (as opposed to 23 824 units last week). As expected, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia didn’t really have an impact on sales, but maybe it prevented a bigger drop. Quite surprisingly, sales are still up Year on Year on a weekly basis (the Nintendo 3DS sold 18 261 units during the same week last year), and YTD-wise (505 170 units so far in 2017, and 482 282 units in 2016).

The Nintendo 3DS should have a decent Golden Week, but sales will inevitably drop once it’s over (though it remains to be seen how low sales will end).

Finally, the Wii U sold 262 units this week. It’s dead, Jim.
