[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 12, 2017 (March 20 – March 26) [Top 50]

Media Create

Week 12 didn’t see any new releases in the Top 20, but Monday was a public holiday, and so we can notice a noticeable increase in sales for many titles. What’s more, Nintendo finally started to ship more Nintendo Switch units to retailers, which in turn (naturally) benefited various games.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is still the most popular title on Nintendo Switch, with 39 103 units sold: that’s a 22% increase. This allows it to pass the 300 000 units sold threshold, which is a pretty positive result. It’s already been said before, but this particular Zelda game definitely has the potential to sell on the long run, and right now, it looks like 400 000 units LTD is a lock.

In comparison, the Wii U version sold “only” 7 796 units this week, and didn’t see any increase in sales… quite the opposite: they dropped by 31%. Naturally, this is because sales were not held back by Hardware shortages, and because the Wii U is a dead platform: the vast majority of players who wanted this particular version bought it at launch, and there’s no “new players” to attract.

Since launch, both version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have sold a combined 383 268 units.

1-2-Switch wasn’t as popular as Zelda, but it saw a bigger increase: +40% this week, with 21 647 units sold. It looks like this one could become an evergreen title, though it’s a bit too early to say for sure. We will have to wait until a “proper” evergreen title is out (such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, for example). Since launch, 1-2-Switch has sold over 137 184 units, and it should be able to reach 200 000 units LTD.

Super Bomberman R is one of the titles that benefited from the new Nintendo Switch shipments, as its sales increased by 25% this week. It’s now sold over 57 708 units since launch, with 6 952 units during Week 12. It looks like it should be able to reach 100 000 units LTD, which is pretty good news for Konami, as Super Bomberman R already is (by far!) the best-selling Bomberman game in several decades.

Dragon Quest Heroes I & II for Nintendo Switch made its comeback in the Top 20, with 4 544 units sold this week, and 41 419 units since launch. It’s most definitely going to drop from the Top 20 by next week, but at least, it should be able to reach 50 000 units sold in the next few weeks.

Next, let’s take a look at the second week for Monster Hunter XX. After a rather disappointing (but not really catastrophic) debut, it had a surprisingly good second week, helped by the public holiday on Monday. However, Media Create reported significantly lower data than Famitsu and Dengeki, so it’s possible they simply adjusted their data this week.

However, retailers did report stronger sales than expected, and some of them even received a second shipment, so it’s the great second week is not entirely due to Media Create adjusting their data.

As for Pokémon Sun and Moon, its sales are as stable as ever, with a 2% drop from Week 10 data. It sold 9 956 units this week, finally dropping below the 10 000 units/week threshold. Since launch, both versions have sold a combined 3 221 001 units at retail (excluding digital sales and the dual-pack).

Meanwhile, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS just keeps on selling, and saw another noticeable increase in sales this weeks thanks to the public holiday on Monday. Sales increased by 20%, with 6 801 units sold this week. This Nintendo 3DS version of Super Mario Maker finally reached 1 million units sold at retail alone, which is an extremely positive thing for Nintendo… because the game is not done selling… far from it!

Finally, here’s how the remaining games in the Top 20 fared this week:

  • 17./21. [3DS] Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki (Level 5) – 4.425 / 694.37. It made its comeback this week, though unfortunately, it’s most likely not going to stay long enough for us to notice it reaching 700 000 units sold since launch (but it’s definitely getting there next month);
  • 18./17. [3DS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 – Professional (Square Enix) – 4.353 / 182.957 (-24%). Unfortunately, this one didn’t see any sort of increase thanks to the public holiday on Monday, but it should be able to reach 200 000 units sold LTD in the upcoming weeks;
  • 20./28. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo)- 4.136 / 150.355. Animal Crossing: New Leaf makes its umpteenth comeback in the Top 20, just in time for this version to reach 150 000 units sold since launch.

This week, Nintendo finally shipped more Nintendo Switch units to retailers, which led to a significant increase in sales. Unfortunately, it looks like Nintendo still is not able to keep up with demand, as the console is still supply-constrained. This makes Week 12 sales look even better, in a way!

With 78 441 units sold this week, the Nintendo Switch is doing pretty well in Japan, and that’s entirely due to the launch line-up and general excitement for the platform. After all, there hasn’t been a single retail release since launch day, and there will not be anything signicant until Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on April 28th.

Sales during the upcoming weeks will be pretty interesting, as April is typically a pretty slow month for video games sales (what with people going back to school after the Spring break) But before that slow period, there’s two weeks of school holidays, where sales should remain strong.

Since launch, the Nintendo Switch has already sold 519 504 units, which is good. But as explained several times before, it’s too early to say it’s truly successful or not.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, it sold 39 359 units this week, so only 3 000 units less than during Week 11. This is a pretty positive result, as sales following the boost generated by a major release usually drop harder than that. But naturally, the public holiday on Monday did help prevent a major drop. Looking at the sales of individual models, we can see that only the New Nintendo 3DS XL was impacted by the drop.

This week, the Nintendo 3DS sold more than it did during the same week last year, by about 9 000 units. As a result, the YTD total for the handheld in 2017 is higher than for 2016: 399 078 units vs 390 442 unit. This is most definitely not going to last, but it’s still something Nintendo must be pretty glad about.

As for the Wii U, its sales slightly rose this week, from 368 units to 411 units. Time to open that champagne bottle!
