[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 11, 2017 (March 13 – March 19) [Top 50]
Media Create
Week 11 saw the release of Monster Hunter XX, by far the biggest release of the year in Japan. Unfortunately for Capcom, this expansion really underperformed, with 848 467 units sold during the first two days. Sales are by no means catastrophic, and there’s no reason for Capcom to press the Panic Button, but they are still pretty low for the Monster Hunter series.
As comparison, here’s how the previous Monster Hunter games sold on Nintendo 3DS:
- Monster Hunter 4: 1.715.060
- Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: 1.446.289
- Monster Hunter Generations: 1.488.367
- Monster Hunter XX: 848.467
As we can see, the drop from Monster Hunter Generations to Monster Hunter XX was bigger than it was for Monster Hunter 4 to Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. This shows that many players were not really interested in this expansion for Monster Hunter Generations, either because they’ve had enough of Monster Hunter on Nintendo 3DS or simply because they would rather have bought the extra content as DLC (instead of a full price title).
Capcom expected to ship 2 million units before April 1st, but it’s pretty clear it’s not going to happen unless retailers order an insane amount of copies (which is not going to happen). Monster Hunter XX will most definitely sell more than 1 million units, and it might reach 2 million units LTD, though the latter doesn’t look very likely at this point. The game would have to sell well on the long run for that to happen.
The other entry in the Top 20 this week is Future Card Buddy Fight Mezase! Buddy Champion!, which sold 9 349 units: a rather standard debut for a licenced game by FuRyu.
Next, we have The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at #4, with 32 115 units (-28%) this week, and 262 977 units since launch. Sales may seem surprisingly stable despite the Nintendo Switch shortages, but then again, it’s not like there are many popular games to chose from on the platform. The Wii U version is #11 this week, with 11 308 units sold this week and 73 392 units since launch.
Combined, they’ve sold a total of 336 396 units, with 400 000 units to be reached in the next few weeks/months. It’s possible total sales could reach 500 000 units sold LTD, but it’s going to take long while before that happens.
And now, let’s take a look at how the other Nintendo Switch titles are holding in the Top 20. First, there’s 1-2-Switch at #9 with 15 456 units sold this week (-25%, 115 737 units since launch). This one is holding rather well so far, and sales on the long run promise to be interesting: are they going to go up as more Nintendo Switch consoles are shipped to retailers, or they will just slowly fade away, as the game is replaced by new, more popular releases?
As for Super Bomberman R, it sold 5 583 additional units this week (-35%), allowing it to reach 50 000 units sold since launch (50 756 units to be precise). Definitely the best result for the franchise in many years, and it’s not quite over. If sales remain steady, Super Bomberman R could end up selling 100 000 units when all is said and done (but not guaranteed just yet).
Finally, here’s how the other games in the Top 20 are faring:
- 12./08. [3DS] Pokemon Sun / Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 10.128 / 3.211.045 (-13%). Sales remain steady, but nothing out of the ordinary;
- 17./09. [3DS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 – Professional (Square Enix) – 5.751 / 178.604 (-41%). The many releases this week made that one drop hard in the Top 20, and it might leave it altogether next week. At the very least, it should have no trouble selling at least 200 000 units LTD;
- 18./14. [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo) – 5.646 / 995.522 (-6%). This one is most definitely reaching 1 million units sold at retail next week (or Week 13 at the very latest): a geat performance!

This week again, the Nintendo Switch was supply constrained, and hard to find in stores (except on Sunday, which had new shipments… still limited, though). And yet, sales didn’t drop nearly as much as you’d expect with such shortages, which is a positive sign. With 49 913 units sold this week, the Nintendo Switch has now sold over 400 000 units since launch (441 063 units to be more precise).
As explained before, it’s too early to say whether the Nintendo Switch is successful in Japan, especially with those shortages. But so far, sales are pretty good, though there’s no doubt they would be (much) better if Nintendo was actually able to keep up with demand. Hopefully, the company gets the situation under control soon, preferrably in early April.
As for the Nintendo 3DS, the release of Monster Hunter XX provided a healthy boost, with 42 279 units sold this week. That’s about 19 000 units more than last week, which shows that despite this new expansion underperforming (and the Nintendo 3DS being such an aged handheld), the selling power of the Monster Hunter franchise is still noticeable.
Quite interestingly, the Monster Hunter XX boost allowed total sales for 2017 to catch up with 2016 sales: 359 719 units for the former, and 359 343 units for the latter. Of course, it’s most likely not going to last very long, but it’s interesting to see the Nintendo 3DS still has some fight left in it.
Finally, the Wii U sold 368 units this week, down from 430 last week.
