[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 24, 2018 (June 11th – June 17th) [Top 50]

Week 24 saw the release of a few games, but only one was on a Nintendo platforms: God Wars: The Complete Legend, which is an expanded version of a game that was already released on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita almost exactly on year ago. It had a rather decent debut compared to the original, with 2 967 units sold (and 2 649 units on PlayStation) according to Media Create.

That’s roughly half what the original version sold at launch, last year. Unfortunately, it will most likely be gone from the Top 20 from Media Create as early as next week!

Meanwhile, Splatoon 2 is back at the top, almost a full year after its release. No doubt this wouldn’t be happening if the market as a whole was healthier, but it’s still a positive sign for the Splatoon series (especially since the Summer holidays haven’t started yet). Sales increased to 15 715 units (+17%), mainly thanks to the Octo Expansion that received a surprise release during E3 2018.

But the thing is, the game was already selling pretty steadily even before the expansion, which is another positive sign for the game and the series itself. It will certainly be interesting to see how much it ends up selling over the Summer holidays (that don’t start for another month). Over 2 379 977 units have been sold to date.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales also increased slightly this week (+8%), mostly thanks to the increase in Hardware sales. Sales topped 10 885 units, and have been back above the 10 000 units/week threshold since last week. Hopefully they manage to stay above it until the Summer holidays kick in, in late July!

Unfortunately, sales dropped slightly for Kirby Star Allies, which sold 7 698 units this week (-4%). Since launch, over 533 672 hungry Kirby have been unleashed in Japan, and it looks like there’s no stopping them. Sales also dropped for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, but they remain strong enough with 7 429 units this week (171 528 units LTD). Let’s wait to see how the Kongs fare during the Summer holidays…

Just like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild saw a slight increase in sales due to the improved Nintendo Switch sales this week. It sold 6 939 units this week (+6%), which brings the total since launch to 1 018 144 units at retail alone. Now that the game has already sold 1 million units, it certainly makes us curious just how high it will go!

Finally, Super Mario Odyssey is back in the Top 10 thanks to a slight increase in sales due to the same reason as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. With 5 482 additional units this week, the game is slowly but surely inching its way to the 2 million units milestone, that will most definitely be reached by the end of the year!

Next, let’s take a look at the games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create:

13./14. [NSW] Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit (Nintendo) – 4.231 / 189.720 (-17%). The game still hasn’t left the Top 20 yet, and with the Summer holidays drawing near, it’s unlikely it will in the near future;
14./17. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 3.921 / 1.649.243 (+6%). It looks like the recent reveal of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Eevee! has actually been having a positive impact on sales (maybe because of how different it is from a “traditional” mainline entry);
18./13. [NSW] Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido (Nintendo) – 2.327 / 7.562 (-56%). After a really surprising debut, the second week saw a surprisingly soft drop in sales. Hopefully this is the sign of steady sales throughout the Summer holidays, but this doesn’t look very likely…

After several uneventful weeks, the Nintendo Switch saw a significant increase in sales this week… despite a lack of notable releases! Granted, the Octo Expansion for Splatoon 2 was released, but sales for the game didn’t increase enough to justify the increase in Hardware sales.

There’s two possible explanations for the increase in sales (it’s a combination of the two):

the release of Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion
increased interest in the Nintendo Switch following E3 (specifically thanks to games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate).

Next week (Week 25) has both Mario Tennis Aces and Minecraft (retail version), so we can safely expect another significant increase in sales. However, it’s unclear just how big the increase will be: it will depend on how well the two games we just mentioned sell at launch. We can also expect sales to remain strong until the Summer holidays kick in.

For Week 24, Nintendo Switch sales are above their Week 24 2017 level, despite ARMS releasing during that week last year. The lack of shortages combined with a better line-up means we should safely expect sales to remain above their 2017 level throughout Summer (the season, not just the holidays!), and most definitely the full year too.

Meanwhile, Nintendo 3DS sales remain flat with 7 052 units sold. That’s half as much as last year during the same week, which is a better hold than in the past few months. Sales should slightly improve during Summer, but this year, there’s no Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age or a new Nintendo 3DS model to boost them.
