[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 2, 2017 (Jan. 09 – Jan. 15)

The second week of the year always sees major drop in sales, and Week 2 2017 was no exception. The drop spared (almost) no one, and even the usual ever-green titles from Nintendo saw a major drop in sales (as seen with the Media Create data below). There were a few releases this week, but none of them were on a Nintendo platform.

Pokémon Sun and Moon sold 31 656 units this week, which is not as good as it should be. At this rate, outselling Pokémon X and Y might very well be nothing but a pipe dream… Sales during the upcoming weeks will tell us whether this is the case or not. Since launch, Pokémon Sun and Moon has sold over 3 071 241 units.

As for Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, it was also impacted by the usual post-holiday drop, though it’s still selling pretty well (23 845 units this week, -75%). There’s no doubt it will reach 1 million units sold at retail, but now that the holiday period is over, it’s going to take a little bit longer (it’s currently sitting at 914 683 units).

Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki is one of the few titles that didn’t see a major drop in sales this week, most likely due to retailers finally getting new shipments. It sold 23 192 units during the second week of the year, which is only 2% less than during the first one (which had the New Year break). Its now sold over 600 000 units since launch, with 608 398 units to be precise.

The latest Nintendo 3DS title in the Top 10 is Momotaro Dentetsu 2017: Tachiagare Nippon!! at #7. It wasn’t spared by the drop in sales, but still managed to sell 16 000 additional units this week. It’s sold over 260 000 units since launch, and should have no trouble reaching 300 000 units within the next couple of months. Hopefully, sales remain strong in the long run!

Next, here’s how the games in the rest of the Top 20 fared during Week 2:

• 12./05. [3DS] Miitopia (Nintendo) – 7.334 / 152.172 (-69%). The post-holiday drop was expected, but is quite noticeable. It doesn’t look like Miitopia will stay in the Top 20 for much longer…
• 13./08. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 6.410 / 107.764 (-59%). Now that the holiday period is over, this one shouldn’t hang around too long in the Top 20, though you can definitely count on it to pop back up during weeks with public holidays;
• 16./11. [WIU] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Microsoft Game Studios) – 4.940 / 275.984 (-63%). With the holiday being over, and the Wii U more or less dead, this one should drop from the Top 20 (for the first time since launch) pretty soon, maybe as soon as next week depending on how bad the drop is for other games. However, it should still be able to top 300 000 units sold before everything is said and done;
• 19./10. [3DS] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball Heroes (Konami) – 3.714 / 77.274 (-73%). Same as the two titles above: now that the holiday period is over, sales dropped sharply. It will drop from the Top 20 next week, though it should be able to top 100 000 units in the upcoming weeks/months.

Hardware-wise, the Wii U came close to dropping below the 1 000 units/week threshold, with 1 169 units sold. It’s quite likely it will drop below that very threshold within the next couple of weeks, if not next week.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales dropped to 34 546 units this week, which is less than last year during the same week. It doesn’t look like Week 1 great sales (above those for Week 1 2016) are indicative of how the Nintendo 3DS is going to sell this year, which isn’t really all that surprising for such an old platform.

Still, sales for the year so far are above those for 2016, which is a minor positive point. After all, it’s unlikely 2017 will remain ahead for much longer…

Next week, Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World will be released (the first release for 2017!), but it shouldn’t have any noticeable impact on Hardware sales.
