[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 17, 2018 (April 23rd – April 29th) [Top 50]

Week 17 once again saw the release of quite a few games, which is why there’s a lot of new faces in the Top 20 from Media Create. Unfortunately, the biggest ones were not on Nintendo platforms… Also, Dillon’s Dead-Heat Breakers did not even chart.

First, we have SD Gundam G Generation Genesis for Nintendo Switch at #9, with 11 975 units sold during the first 4 days according to Media Create. That’s a rather unimpressive performance, even for a late port. What’s worse, it’s unlikely the game will sell on the long run like other similar ports…

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Legacy for Nintendo Switch also had a rather unimpressive debut, with only 6 682 units sold. That’s actually slightly better than the PlayStation 4 version, but sales for that one were nothing to write home about to begin with. It will be interesting to see if the game does end up selling on the long run or not, but sales from previous titles show that it most likely will not.

During the second week, Nintendo Labo sales dropped pretty hard with “only” 25 914 units sold for the Variety Kit (-71%), and 5 680 units sold for the Robot Kit (-80%). The drop is definitely worse than expected, but not really all that worrying for now. Of course, if sales don’t pick up during the Golden Week, that will be a different story!

Combined, both kits sold about 30 000 units this week, and over 150 000 units since launch.

Thanks to a slight rise in Hardware sales, several evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch saw their sales increase this week. That’s the case of Splatoon 2, with 18 664 units sold (+12%). There’s no doubt it will be one of the key titles during the Golden Week!

As for Kirby Star Allies, its sales are finally up after several weeks of drops (the “natural” sales trajectory for most games). Sales increased slightly to 17 950 units sold (+3%). A pretty positive sign as the Golden Week starts this week, because there’s no doubt this game will be one of its stars. Over 451 439 units have been sold since launch, and the 500 000 units milestone is just around the corner!

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe saw a similar incrase in sales than Splatoon 2, with 13 191 units sold: that’s +16% in a week. Of course, we can safely expect to further increase during the Golden Week, though the game will definitely not need those extra sales to reach the 1.5 million units milestone.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 are faring:

• 11./06. [NSW] The Snack World: TreJarers Gold (Level 5) – 10.482 / 61.984 (-34%). It looks like we can expect sales to remain either flat or slightly increase during the Gold Week, and that it will reach 100 000 units sold LTD eventually (maybe even 200 000 if it keeps selling throughout the year);
• 13./10. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 7.850 / 969.276 (+14%). It will reach 1 million units sold at retail right after the Golden Week;
• 14./11. [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo) – 7.244 / 1.704.766 (+12%). Another game that saw its sales increase ahead of the Golden Week.

Media Create – Hardware

Hardware-wise, Nintendo Switch sales did increase slightly this week, which is a positive sign as the Golden Week hasn’t started yet. With 38 752 units sold, the console did a lot worse than last year during the same week… but of course, that’s because of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (released on April 28th, 2017), making a direct comparison a bit unfair.

It will certainly be interesting to see how the console performs over the Golden Week, which will be quite different this year:

• no widespread shortages like last year
• Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (2017) vs Nintendo Labo + Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze + the ever-green titles (The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe) (2018)

The situation isn’t quite the same, so will the Nintendo Switch sell more than it did last year? Or will it sell less? One thing’s for sure: it will be in high demand, and should have no trouble topping Hardware sales chart again.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales were basically flat this week with 7 733 units sold. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely even the Golden Week will have a significant impact on its sales.
