[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 17, 2017 (April 24 – April 30) [Top 50]

NB: due to the Golden Week, Media Create data will only be available at a later date. For our usual analysis, we’re going to use Famitsu data instead, so please keep that in mind if you plan on making comparisons with last week’s data.

Famitsu

This week saw the releases of several titles in Japan, but the star is obviously Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which is off to a great start. It sold 280 229 units during the first three days, which is less than Mario Kart 8 at launch on Wii U (350 749 units, but with a significantly installed base).

Here’s how the previous Mario Kart games sold at launch:

  • [SFC] Super Mario Kart (Feb. 27, 1992) – No launch data available
  • [N64] Mario Kart 64 – 160.363 / 1.711.661 (Dec. 14, 1996)
  • [NGC] Mario Kart: Double Dash!! – 179.230 / 825.894 (July 7th, 2003)
  • [NDS] Mario Kart DS – 224.411 / 4.006.571 (Dec. 8, 2005)
  • [GBA] Mario Kart: Super Circuit – 261.797 / 938.175 (July 21st, 2001)
  • [WIU] Mario Kart 8 – 350.749 / 1.332.004 (May 29th, 2014)
  • [3DS] Mario Kart 7 – 451.932 / 2.706.582 (Dec. 1st, 2011)
  • [WII] Mario Kart Wii – 608.147 / 3.717.665 (Apr. 10th, 2008)

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe‘s debut is pretty good, given the size of the installed based of the Nintendo Switch. According to reports from retailers, consumers are not treating this game as a mere port, and first week sales confirm that.About 60-80% of all units shipped to retailers for launch were sold, which is a good sign: there should not be any shortages during the Golden Week.

Sales in the upcoming weeks are going to be pretty important for the console, as it’s the only title that will be able to support Hardware sales until ARMS (June 16th) and Splatoon 2 (July 21st) are released. Of course, demand will remain strong during the second week, thanks to the Golden Week, but after that, we enter one of the slowest periods of the year: that’s when Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales will be the most interesting.

The second entry of the week is Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission X, which is also off to a great start… in fact, it’s the best start for the Dragon Ball Heroes series! With 92 809 units sold (60-80% sell-through), this final entry on Nintendo 3DS sold about 2 000 units more than Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission (released in 2013, and the one with the best debut).

Will it manage to sell on the long run, like the previous two entries (300 000 units and 220 000 units respectively), or will sales be frontloaded? Only one thing to do to find out… wait for a couple of weeks!

The final entry of the week on Nintendo platforms is Cube Creator DX, which had a rather decent debut: 4 697 units. This is nothing mind-blowing, but the game has the potential to sell well on the long run. Sales during the Golden Week will tell us what to expect for this title, though we already know that Arc System Works shipped enough copies to avoid shortages in the near future (20-40% of launch shipment was sold).

Next, we have Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia at #3, with 25 099 units sold. That’s a 81% drop compared to launch week, which is pretty high but not unusual for a RPG during its second week. The problem is that it’s unlikely this remake will sell on the long run: it will definitely reach 200 000 units, but after that…

As for Monster Hunter XX, its sales increased slightly (+1%) thanks to the public holiday on Saturday, and ended up selling 24 038 units (1 544 724 units since launch). We can expect another increase in sales for the Golden Week, before sales drop to “low” levels during the post Golden Week period.

Next, let’s take a look at the sales of Nintendo Switch launch titles:

  • 05./06. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 17.085 / 393.726 <80-100%> (+18%). As we expected, the release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had a positive impact on sales (more precisely the bigger Hardware shipment), and this version is nearing 400 000 units sold since launch (a threshold that will be reached next week, without fail);

Unfortunately, the Wii U version dropped from the Top 20 this week, even though sales did increase slightly (+4%). That increase is pretty limited compared to the Nintendo Switch version, because there was no Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and bigger Hardware shipment to boost sales. 2 949 units were sold this week, and 100 254 units since launch.

Combined, both versions have sold 493 980 units since launch, according to Famitsu (not counting the digital version).

  • 09./08. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 6.768 / 181.641 <80-100%> (+2%). Just like Zelda, it benefited from the release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (and more precisely the bigger Hardware shipment), but the increase is much more limited. No wonder, since it’s a multiplayer title, and it’s directly competing with Mario Kart;
  • 22./14. [NSW] Super Bomberman R (Konami) 2.847 / 80.471 <80-100%> (-10%). Sales are stable, but it doesn’t seem to have benefited much from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launch.

As for Pro Yakyuu Famista Climax, it had an uneventful second week, with 12 009 units sold (-72%, 55 581 units sold). Several retailers have reported shortages this week: let’s hope that Bandai-Namco can ship enough copies to last through the Golden Week, as it would definitely be a shame to lose sales during that particular week.

Mario Sports Superstars keeps selling at a steady pace, with 5 649 units sold this week (-17%). We can expect an increase in sales (or stability) during the Golden Week, which should bring it closer to 100 000 units LTD (it’s currently standing at 73 169 units).

Pokémon Sun and Moon is also enjoying steady sales: -7%, with 4 030 units sold (3 749 283 units since launch). Just like various other family-friendly titles, it should see a boost in sales during the Golden Week. Finally, Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki is already enjoying that Golden Week boost, with +4% this week (2 986 units this week, 707 148 units since launch).

Famitsu – Hardware

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch saw a major increase in sales, due not so much to the release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe itself, but rather the bigger shipments Nintendo sent to retailers. Demand keep outpacing offers, and as such, what is sold every week corresponds to what Nintendo shipped.

It will be interesting to see how many units Nintendo saved for the Golden Week, and if those lower-than-expected sales for the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launch is due to Nintendo saving some units for the following week. And as mentioned above, it will also be interesting to see if Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be able to support sales during the post Golden Week-period.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales are pretty steady both Week on Week and Year on Year, which is a pretty positive sign given the lack of major releases. Sales are bound to increase during the Golden Week, and then drop again the following week.

The announcement of the New Nintendo 2DS XL should not have a noticeable impact on sales in the near future (sales will definitely drop after the Golden Week, but that will not be because of that new model).

Finally, the Wii U sold 184 units, a 50% drop from Week 16 sales.
