[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 15, 2018 (April 9th – April 15th) [Top 50]

Media Create

After a week without any new releases at all, Week 15 provides a slight change of pace with a grand total of… 3 new releases! Unfortunately, they didn’t sell all that much, with less than 100 000 units sold for all the new games in the Top 20 from Media Create (combined).

The best-seller this week is one of the new entries (and the only one on a Nintendo platform): The Snack World: Trejarers Gold on Nintendo Switch. It sold 35 655 units during the first 4 days on the market, which is pretty good for a port of a Nintendo 3DS games released less than a year ago (but which does feature both DLC packs).

In comparison, the original version on Nintendo 3DS sold 84 288 units at launch (and over 257 800 units LTD. NB: Famitsu data). The Nintendo Switch port fared fairly well, but it now remains to be seen whether it will sell in the long run. Considering the anime series ends this week, it’s unlikely, but it’s a bit too early to say for sure: we will have to wait until the Golden Week has come and gone!

This week, sales did drop again for Kirby Star Allies, but it wasn’t enough to prevent it from reaching the 400 000 units milestone: it’s now sold over 416 000 units at retail. It’s pretty likely the 500 000 units milestone will be reached during the Golden Week, which starts at the end of the month (next week, basically). With 23 695 units sold this week (-33%), Kirby Star Allies is holding pretty well in this slow period.

Sales also dropped for Splatoon 2, but it held better than Kirby: 18 729 units were sold this week according to Media Create, which brings the total since launch to 2 232 305 units. The game market is always pretty slow in April and May in Japan, which is why Splatoon 2 isn’t going to leave the Top 10 any time soon: it’s selling power on the long run is something else (that’s an evergreen title for you).

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe held even better, with 12 415 units sold this week (-10%). It’s actually holding better than Splatoon 2, most likely because of the Nintendo Switch bundle (Nintendo Switch sales did drop slightly this week). Those steady sales bode pretty well for the Golden Week, which will be the second one for this game… and it’s once again going to be among the top-sellers!

“(Slight) Drop, but sales remain strong enough” is something that could be said about pretty much all the Nintendo Switch games in the Top 20 from Media Create (with the exception of Hyrule Warriors: Definiteve Edition).

Naturally, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is no exception, with 6 990 units sold this week (-18%). It’s slowly but steadily moving towards the next milestone: 1 million units sold on Nintendo Switch only (954 532 units as of this week)!

Finally, Super Mario Odyssey sold 6 924 units this week: that’s a 16% drop compared to the previous week. It’s getting closer and closer from the 2 million units milestone, but it’s going to be a few months until it reaches it.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

  • 13./12. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 3.931 / 1.614.909 (-22%). Another week in the Top 20!
  • 14./09. [3DS] Detective Pikachu (Pokemon Co.) – 3.837 / 68.392 (-45%). So far, the sales trajectory is pretty much as expected. Will it get a bump during the Golden Week?
  • 19./13. [NSW] Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition (Koei Tecmo) – 3.070 / 40.408 (-36%). It will end up selling over 50 000 units LTD, though it doesn’t look like it has a chance of reaching 100 000 units LTD (certainly not any time soon).

Hardware-wise, there really isn’t a lot to say this week. Nintendo Switch did drop slightly, from 40 000 units to 36 000 units, most likely due to the slow period the market is currently in, as well as the lack of new releases.

Usually, we would not expect sales to improve until the Golden Week (which starts next week), but with the release of Nintendo Labo on Friday, it’s safe to expect sales to increase during Week 16. However, it’s not clear how big the increase will be: it will most likely depend on how good Nintendo Labo’s debut is.

Since this is a “game” that’s bound to sell steadily (instead of explosive sales at launch), with stronger sales during weeks with public holidays, holidays, and the holiday season, this makes predicting the impact on Nintendo Switch sales pretty hard… especially as predicting Nintendo Labo sales in the first place is no easy task, given there’s no similar product on the market.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales dropped once again, but as usual, the drop isn’t really all that bad… because the console has been on “low but steady” mode for a few months already! 8 546 units were sold this week: that’s about 3 times less than during the same week last year. After over 3 months in 2018, the YTD total is barely at 200 000 units sold: it looks like even reaching 1 million units is going to be hard this year…
