Japan: Famitsu sales for January 2017 (Top 5 Software, Top 3 publishers)

Today, Famitsu shared its sales data for January 2017 in Japan (December 29th to January 29th). This is a traditionally slow month for sales, yet the three Nintendo 3DS titles in the Top 5 below held rather well.

Let’s start with Pokémon Sun and Moon, which topped sales for the third month in a row with 353 983 units sold (-61%). It’s now sold over 3.6 million units at retail, including the dual-pack, downloads cards, but not digital sales via the Nintendo eShop. It’s unlikely it will be in the Top 5 for February, though…

As for Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, it also held pretty well in January. It sold 301 472 units during its second month on the market, which is only 59% less than in December (which had the biggest weeks of the year for video game sales). Total sales have now topped 1 million units at retail (including downloads cards), which is an extremely positive for the “downport” of a Wii U game.

Finally, Momotaro Dentetsu 2017: Tachiagare Nippon!! is the only game with an increase in sales: +76%. In fact, it sold more during the second month: 232 273 units in January (as opposed to “only” 132 063 units during its launch week).

This isn’t too surprising, as it was only tracked for 4 days last month (it came out on December 22nd, and the Famitsu chart for December ended on December 25th), and it was a pretty popular during the New Year holiday.

Famitsu – Top 5

3DS – 3
PS4 – 2

Software-wise, Nintendo was the most successful publisher, with over 1 million units sold, and more precisely 887 731 units for the games in the Top 5 (216 629 units for games outside the Top 5). The Pokémon Company was #2, thanks to Pokémon Sun and Moon. Finally, Square-Enix is #3, but it’s not really thanks to Nintendo platforms…

Nintendo – 1.104.000
Pokemon Co. – 366.000
Square Enix – 315.000

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo 3DS ended up selling 355 816 units, which is about 95 000 units more than last year during the same month. Unfortunately, the increase Year on Year will not last much longer, as only the first couple of weeks saw such an increase in weekly sales. As for the Wii U, already with two feet in the grave, it managed to sell ten times less than during January 2016…
