Investor meeting: Kimishima on amiibo sales (April 2016)

Animal Crossing amiiboDuring the usual meeting with investors, which always follows the presentation of the latest financial results, Nintendo talked about the sales of amiibo.

First, a graph was shown, with shipment data for amiibo worldwide: about 24.7 million figures and about 28.9 million cards. Naturally, this is a huge increase compared to Fiscal Year 2014-15, mostly due to the fact that amiibo first launched in November 2014 (in other words, only a few months, as opposed to a full year for Fiscal Year 2015-16).

As usual, Tatsumi Kimishima mentioned the “continued presence for Nintendo characters in stores”, which is why he believes the amiibo platform has been pretty beneficial to all Nintendo platforms.

The second graph shows sell-through data for the Splatoon amiibo in Japan. Everything Splatoon is pretty popular in Japan, and the amiibo are no exception. In fact, they are by far the most popular types of figures in the country. Tatsumi Kimishima revealed that almost 1 million Splatoon figures were sold in Japan alone since launch.

The graph below shows that sales really picked up during Q3: that’s when Nintendo started sending new shipments to retailers, as the figures quickly sold out at launch (in May 2015). But even during Q1 2016, they just kept on selling, and it looks like nothing is going to stop them any time soon.

Finally, the third and last graph shows sell-through data for three figures from the initial batch: Link, Pikachu, and Zelda (United States. Those figures have become “evergreen”, which means they keep selling on long periods of times, and regardless of seasonal fluctuations.
