Indie news (June 9): The Mummy Demastered / Battle Chasers: Nightwar / Mr. Shifty

Today’s Indie news: WayForward working on The Mummy Demastered for the Nintendo Switch, but also…

  • Battle Chasers: Nightwar
  • Mr. Shifty
  • Dark Witch Combat + Brave Dungeon
  • Yoku’s Island Express

The Mummy Demastered

Yesterday, WayForward announced their latest game, which is called The Mummy Demastered. As the name implies, it’s indeed based on the latest The Mummy movie.

The press release describes it as a retro-inspired platforming adventure game, where you get to play as an elite Prodigium agent tasked with taking down Princess Ahmanet’s army of the undead (in order to save the world, naturally). Players will get to explore dark forests, maze-like military compounds, sandstorm-filled streets of London, and more.

Here’s one lone screenshot:

Mr. Shifty

Yesterday, the update for Mr. Shifty on Nintendo Switch was finally released. It fixes most of the issues with game, with one exception: a random crash crash, seemingly caused by the Unity plug-in used. The good news is, there’s only a “small” chance of that crash happening, which means you should be safe. If you really want to play it safe, you can try rebooting your console.

If you’re wondering why it took so long for the patch to be released, here’s an explanation from tinyBuild:

Regarding the loading times — we had to restructure the game to compress a ton of assets and essentially unarchive them when the levels load. This helped reduce the size, but made the loading times longer. This is why it took so long to get the patch out, we were playing ping pong with Nintendo — trying lots of different things to reduce the size of the patch.

The good news is that we know all of this going into future projects, and have given plenty of feedback to both the platform and the tool maker. It really sucks that a simple patch took us this long, and trust me – we weren’t sitting around doing nothing. An insane amount of work went into making the patch size small.
