Dragon Quest XI: the Nintendo 3DS version wasn’t planned from the start

During the livestream dedicated to Dragon Quest X, Yosuke Saito and Yuji Horii were asked about the Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete. They explained that they could not show that version for now due to “various reasons”.

Also, in the pamphlet distributed at the event, there’s with an interview of the developers. It reveals that development began in earnest in 2015. Originally, Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete was only supposed to be released on the PlayStation 4. However, since they wanted as many players as possible to play it, they ended up developing a Nintendo 3DS version alongside the PS4 one.

What’s more, to make sure players on Nintendo 3DS didn’t feel they were left with an inferior version of the game, one of the staff member came up with the idea of having two modes (3D and 2D).

Unfortunately, the interview doesn’t mention the Nintendo Switch version at all, which most definitely wasn’t planned from the start (and we don’t really need the interview to know that!). It will certainly be interesting to find out how that version came to be, when it was decided it would be released, or why it took so long for Square-Enix to show it.

Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete (3DS) comes out on July 29th in Japan. The Nintendo Switch version will follow at a later date.
