Attack on Titan 2 (Switch): latest details, screenshots, and trailer

Over the past couple of weeks, Koei-Tecmo revealed quite a bit of new details about Attack on Titan 2 on Nintendo Switch: new characters, gameplay systems, etc…. There’s even some new screenshots and illustrations, as well as a brand new trailer!

Let’s start with the new trailer, that showcases some of the actions you can perform to hunt down those pesky titans:

Attack on Titan 2 – Characters

Here’s some new characters, recently revealed:

  • Hangeo Zoe (returning character):

A Section Commander of the Scout Regiment. Hange acts as Erwin’s advisor due to her high intelligence and excellent combat skills. However, her interest in capturing and researching Titans often leads her to disagreements with Erwin. Although she is normally a talented commander, her interest in Titans occasionally runs wild causing much concern for Hange’s right-hand subordinate, Moblit.

  • Erwin Smith (returning character):

The Commander of the Scout Regiment. His strong leadership skills has brought together the highly idiosyncratic members of the Regiment. However, he is also prepared to make any heartless decision necessary to bring humanity one step closer to victory. With this goal in mind, he designed the long-distance enemy scouting formation to increase the survival rate of Expeditions which he makes use of to lay the groundwork for retaking Wall Maria.

  • Hannes (new playable character):

A soldier of the Garrison Regiment with a taste for alcohol. He once saved young Eren and Mikasa during the Colossal Titan’s attack on Shiganshina Distict but was overcame with fear of the Titans that he could not save Eren’s mother, Caria. Following the attack, he eventually became a captain of the Engineering Corps in the Trost District.

  • Ian Dietrich (new playable character):

A soldier of the Garrison Regiment who serves as the leader of its Elite Squad. His exceptional combat skills and capacity to make sound judgements earned him Commander Pyxis’ confidence.

  • Rico Brzenska (new playable character):

A soldier of the Garrison Regiment and a member of its Elite Squad along with Ian and Mitabi. Rationale to a fault, she is capable of making cold-hearted decisions if the situation called for it.

  • Mitabi Jarnach (new playable character):

A soldier of the Garrison Regiment and a member of its Elite Squad along with Ian and Rico. Although he typically has a foul mouth, his strong sense of responsibility is second to none.

  • Thomas Wagner (new playable character):

A graduate of the 104th Cadet Corps. His performance as a Cadet was not enough to put him in the top ten of his year. He applied for the Scout Regiment after coming into contact with Eren’s powerful desire to eliminate the Titans. He was attached to the same squad as Eren during the Defense of Trost District.

  • Mina Carolina (new playable character):

A graduate of the 104th Cadet Corps. Her performance as a Cadet was not enough to put her in the top ten of her year. She applied for the Scout Regiment after coming into contact with Eren’s powerful desire to eliminate the Titans. She was attached to the same squad as Eren during the Defense of Trost District.

  • Nile Dawk

Commander of the Military Police Regiment. Due to his position, he values maintaining order within the Walls over all else. This leads him to advocate for Eren’s speedy punishment during the Special Military Tribunal that decided his fate.

  • Marlo

A new recruit in the Military Police Regiment who has been dispatched to the same Stohess District branch as Annie and Hitch. He plans to someday reform the now-undisciplined and corrupt Regiment into a just organization.

  • Hitch

A new recruit in the Military Police Regiment who has been dispatched to the same Stohess District branch as Annie and Marlo. While she joined the Regiment in hopes of an easy life, she finds herself dissatisfied there, stuck with work forced upon her by her superiors.

Attack on Titan 2 – System

If you’re even remotely familiar with the Attack on Titan series, you definitely know about the omni-directional mobility gear. Thanks to it, you can freely fly around the battlefield. Without it, you have simply no chance to defeat a Titan, as their only known weak point is the nape. Using the ODM, you can maneuver around Titans and severe limbs (arms, legs), in order to make it easier for you to attack the nape.

Here’s a few techniques/actions you can use on the battlefield:

  • Hook Drive: air jump right before a Titan attack, allowing you to evade. You can land a powerful finishing blow by attacking while evading.
  • Sneak Attack: sometimes, you need to avoid direct confrontation. That’s when you hold the target button to enter a telescopic view, and take aim. Once your target is lined up, you can charge towards the Titan at breakneck speed by hitting the attack button. Then, once you’re right by the Titan, press the attack button again to unleash an extremely powerful attack.

While on the battlefield, you will come across bases: those allow you to replenish gas, blades, and more. There’s various types of bases, including some that shoot cannonballs at Titans. Naturally, it’s highly recommended to make a stop at one whenever you can… well, only if you’re interested in surviving, that is.

One thing to keep in mind is that you’re not alone on the battlefield: various team members are also there and fight Titans by your side. And they’re not just for show: they can support you via a variety of buddy actions, that you can trigger by pressing the right button when you see an icon over their head. Just make sure to ask for their help at the right time, because you must wait a few moments before you can trigger a buddy action again.

And of course, there’s also Titans on the battlefield, but unlike your teammates, it’s not good to stay in their field of view. When you do, the caution gauge fills up, and when it’s full, you enter the “danger zone”: the screen becomes all red, and the Titans become much more agressive… better to just fly to safety and let the storm pass when that happens. You can also use flash lights to blind them.

Finally, when you need to capture Titans, you can use the restraining gun: it shoots a net at them, allowing you to stop their movement completely.
