Atelier Lydie & Suelle: latest details and screenshots, opening movie, soundtrack sample

Last week, Koei-Tecmo and Gust shared even more details and screenshots for Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paitings, but also the opening movie, and a soundtrack sample.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paitings – Characters

Let’s start with some new characters:

  • Mireille Ferrié Adalett (voiced by Youko Hikasa, and designed by NOCO). A 25 year old young woman (166cm tall), and receptionist who also happens to be the princess of the Adalett Kingdom (she’s the next in line to inherit the throne). She works at the royal castle, in Melveille, and she’s the one handling everything about the Atelier Rank system. She’s Matthias’ older sister. She’s described as an elegant and cheerful person, friendly to anyone. Lydie & Suelle look up to her, as a reliable mentor.
  • Onett Marlen (voiced by Hana Takeda, and designed by Yuugen). She was Roger’s wife, and therefore Lydie and Suelle’s mother. She died three years ago, due to a widespread disease. It is said she was a really positive person, so much so that the room immediately brightened when she entered. Her only wish was for her family to live a happy and peaceful life. She was quite the doting mother, alwyas calling her two daughters her “treasure”. Gust mentions an “important family promise” Lydie and Suelle are keeping alive in their hearts.
  • Grave (voiced by Sayaka Kinoshita, and designed by Yuugen). A 55 year old nun (163cm tall), who works for the Venue Church, and is referred to as “Sister Grace” by the people. She’s a pretty devout person, who organises various events to entertain people, on her days off. She may look pretty young, she’s in fact over 50 years old: a fact that always surprise anyone learning her true age. A certain incident that happened in the past is still haunting her to this very day. She’s quite the talkative lady.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paitings – Battle system

Besides the new characters, Koei-Tecmo and Gust also have more details about the battle system in Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paitings.

First: Follow Skills. The kind of Follow Skill used by the character in the rear depends on the actions of the character in the front. There’s various types of skills to use:

  • attack-based
  • defense-based
  • recovery-based
  • and more…

There’s also items, which play a key role in the battle system. For example, you can use special items that make it easy to “break” enemies: when you do so, they’re knocked unconscious, and cannot take any action. All characters can use items in battle, but they don’t all have access to the same ones.

When they’re about to be attacked, Lydie and Suelle can be protected by another team member, thanks to the Support Guard. The interesting thing is that you can choose when to trigger one, at any time, which implies it’s not triggered automatically.

As for Combination Arts (special moves launched by teams of characters), they can be used once the Combination Gauge is filled up. To fill it up, the character in front has to damage the enemy, and the one in the back has to use Follow Skills.

Here’s some examples of Combination Arts:

  • Suelle + Matthias: All-Out Gunplay. They attack enemies from both sides, using a pistol and a sword respectively;
  • Lydie + Alto: Sanctuary of Demise. Makes a huge magic circle appear, dealing lots of damage and inflicting the enemy with status ailments;
  • Sophie + Firis: Happy Alchemy. Allows you to enjoy various recovery effects.

As mentioned last time, you can use Battle Mixes and Extra Mixes in battle, in order to create items to use on the spot. But the thing is, you need recipes for that, and you can get some as quest rewards, or from (in-game) reference books. Some recipes can be synthesized by both, but there’s also some that only Lydie or Suelle can craft.

By the way, some effects can only be obtained via Battle Mixes and Extra Mixes, such as Complete Freeze (only available via an Extra Mix). And if you add some more Archeus Anima, you can further enhance the Ex Effect. In the case of Complete Freeze, it becomes Eternal Freeze.

Naturally, the more powerful the items you use for synthesis, the greater the effect you get as a result, so it’s definitely a good idea to be prepared before heading into battle.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paitings – Blacksmith

Just like many other RPGs, Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paitings has a blacksmith, where you can use various materials (and money!) to forge or strengthen equipment (weapons, armour, etc.). Each piece of equipment has a stat called “equipment efficiency”, that determines how efficient it is (pretty self-explanatory). The higher the value, the better.

As you progress through the game, the number of pieces of equipments you can forge increases.

But that’s not all: when making armour, the special characteristics of the materials you use can carry over (up to 3).

Besides forging new pieces of equipment, you can also further strengthen weapons using parts:

  • Core Parts: damage-related effects and characteristics
  • Sub Parts: special effect-related effects and characteristics.

You can try out various combinations of Core and Sub Parts, if you want. You can even have the effects carry over, but only up to 3 of them.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paitings – Bosses

Just like most RPGs, there’s bosses to be found in Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paitings. Those enemies are quite stronger than your average critter, and they need a top-notch team and careful preparation to be taken down. One of them can freely manipulate thunder.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paitings – Locations

Here’s one more more location to be found in the game:

  • Star-Painted Plains (Mysterious Painting): plains with flowers in full bloom, with stars falling endlessly, and blooming into star flowers as they touch the ground.

Next, here’s the latest batch of screenshots for the game:

Finally, here’s a couple of videos. The first one is none other than the Opening Movie!

And the second one is a soundtrack sample:

Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paitings (Switch) comes out on December 21st in Japan, and Early 2018 in Europe and North America.
